BOX SCORE WORCESTER, Mass. – Five student-athletes scored multiple goals and the nationally ranked No. 14 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team cruised to a 20-5 victory at Assumption College Wednesday night.
Nicole McKee (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) lead the way for the Chargers with five goals, while
Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) scored three and handed out two assists.
With the win, the Chargers improved to 8-6 overall and 6-3 in Northeast-10 Conference action. The Greyhounds dropped to 8-7 overall and 5-6 in conference play.
UNH jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals from #Natalie Lieberman and
Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield). At the 23:52 mark, Assumption scored its first goal to cut the Chargers lead to 2-1. Over the next three minutes, New Haven went on a 3-0 run, sparked by
Nicole McKee (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur), to take a 5-1 lead just 10 minutes into the first half. Two straight scores from Assumption brought the game to 5-3 midway through the first half. UNH then went on a 6-1 run to close out he first half and take an 11-4 lead at halftime.
The Greyhounds struck first in the second half with an unassisted goal at the 27:54 mark. New Haven would then close the game on a 9-0 run to take a commanding 20-5 lead in the final two minutes. During the stretch, McKee scored four of her game-high five points during the final minutes.
Campbell added a team-high seven draw controls to lead the Chargers. She added three ground balls and two caused turnovers to her state line.
Kristina Curry (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) was second on the team with four goals, while Lieberman scored three in the win.
Marissa Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) added two scores, while
Brittany Ast (Glenwood, N.J./Vernon Township),
Devon Previte (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and
Corinne Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) each scored one.
The Chargers held a 34-18 lead in shots, 17-8 lead in draw controls and a 14-12 advantage in ground balls. UNH successfully cleared the ball 15-of-16 times and scored on 6-of-10 free position shots.
New Haven returns to action on Saturday, April 20 when it travels to Southern New Hampshire University. The Chargers and Penmen get underway at 4 p.m. in Manchester, N.H.
