Campbell, Lieberman Lead No. 14 Chargers Past American International, 20-5

BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. – After an early 3-3 deadlock with visiting American International on Tuesday, the No. 14 University of New Haven women’s lacrosse team scored 17 of the game’s final 19 goals to run away with a 20-5 decision in Northeast-10 action on Kayo Field. Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) and Natalie Lieberman (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) each came within one point of the New Haven program record with nine points apiece.

With their fifth straight win, the Chargers improve to 10-6 overall and 8-3 in the Northeast-10. New Haven has secured at least the fifth seed in the upcoming NE-10 Championship and can claim the fourth seed with a win Saturday coupled with a Bentley loss in at least one of the Falcons’ final two regular season outings. American International drops to 1-14 and remains winless in the conference at 0-11.

Lieberman finished with seven goals and two assists while Campbell notched five goals and four assists to account for their career-best nine-point performances. Ashley Ferrandiz ’12 compiled a program record 10 points in a 20-6 win over Southern New Hampshire on April 14, 2012. Ferrandiz scored nine points on five occasions during her storied career, while Alexis Gabbe ’12 also posted nine points at in a 21-10 win at No. 13 Dowling on April 4, 2012.

With 18 total points, Lieberman and Campbell are the highest scoring teammates in a single game in the 13-year history of New Haven women’s lacrosse. Lieberman’s seven goals are also one shy of the program mark of eight tallies set by Assistant Coach Brigid Brady ’09 on March 31, 2006 at Saint Anselm and tied by Gabbe on the same field on April 30, 2011.

In today’s game, Nicole McKee (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) buried five goals, while Kristina Curry (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow), Courtney Ackland (Perth, Western Australia/Churchlands) and Maya Szymanski (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) each netted one. Curry also handed out a pair of assists.

In the transition game, Campbell and Curry picked up seven groundballs apiece, and Campbell led all players with eight draw controls.

Defensively, Curry caused five Yellow Jackets’ turnovers, with Campbell and Brittany Ast (Glenwood, N.J./Vernon Township) each creating three AIC miscues. Marissa McDermott (Longmeadow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy) started between the posts and made five saves in the first half. Alyssa Gianotti (Monkton, Md./Hereford) stopped two shots over the first 27:39 of the second period, and Sharon Strain (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) did not face a shot while helming the Chargers’ goal for the final 2:21 of the victory.

The Chargers held a 48-16 advantage in shots and won 18 of the game’s 27 draw controls.

After playing to a 1-1 deadlock through 12 minutes, McKee’s first goal of the day put the Chargers back on top, and Szymanski added a tally just 29 seconds later to extend the margin to 3-1 with 17:21 remaining in the half. The Yellow Jackets answered with two markers in a span of 19 seconds to restore a 3-3 stalemate that would hold for more than four minutes before Curry found the back of the net at 11:03 to stake New Haven to a 4-3 lead that it would not relinquish.

That tally started the Chargers on the contest’s first extended run as the home team finished the first half on an 8-1 stretch, including six unanswered goals to end the period, and headed into the locker room with an 11-4 advantage.

McKee opened the second-half scoring just 28 seconds in on a feed from Lieberman as the run continued to 14 consecutive markers. AIC finally broke its scoreless streak after a drought spanning 31:30 of game time, but the outcome had long been decided as the Chargers cruised to a 20-5 win.

New Haven wraps up the regular season on Saturday with a 1 p.m. visit from Saint Michael’s. Northeast-10 Championship play begins on Wednesday, May 1. Details regarding the Chargers’ postseason opponent and destination will be announced on NewHavenChargers.com and on Twitter @UNHChargers after the quarterfinal matchups are finalized by the conference office.
