Gelardi Claims Two UNH Records, Stonesifer Pitches Complete Game Shutout at Assumption

BOX SCORE WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn./Derby) crossed the plate in the top of the third inning to score the University of New Haven softball team's game-winning run over Assumption College Friday afternoon. In the meantime, she became the Chargers all-time leader in runs scored in a single season and career. Along with another run in the fifth inning, she helped lead New Haven to a 4-0 shutout of the hosting Greyhounds.

At the conclusion of the game, the shortstop had improved her records to 143 and 53, respectively. Senior pitcher Micah Stonesifer (Archer City, Texas/Archer City / Vernon College) threw her fifth complete game shutout of the season by allowing just three hits and striking out two batters.

New Haven improved to 33-11 overall and 14-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division. Assumption dropped to 14-26 overall and 7-12 in divisional play.

The Chargers’ first run came without the benefit of a base hit. After Gelardi walked and stole second base, Assumption hurler Jenn Lathal threw the ball away on a sacrifice bunt from Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks) that allowed Gelardi to come all the way around the score. Not only did the run stake New Haven to a 1-0 lead, but Gelardi also broke the program’s single-season (52) and career (142) records for runs scored. Chelsea Harold ’11 previously owned the single-season mark, while the career record formerly belonged to Nicole Downs ’10.

With Stonesifer continuing to hang zeroes on the scoreboard, the Blue and Gold extended its cushion to 2-0 in the top of the fourth frame on a Brook Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) home run, her second of the spring. The side was retired once again in the bottom of the fifth before the Chargers' lead improved.

Gelardi walked, stole second and ended up on third after a Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks) sacrifice bunt. Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) then doubled to right field to put the Chargers ahead 3-0. Two batters later, Keri Tricinelli (Brick, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) sealed the win with a double to right center to drive in the Chargers fourth run. The Chargers would leave the bases juiced in the fifth, but managed to take a four-run lead.

Assumption mounted a pair of opportunities in the sixth and seventhin innings. Two of the first three batters earned walks in the bottom of the sixth, but Stonesifer threw a strikeout and forced the third out with a grounder to get out of the inning.

Assumption put the Chargers down one, two, three in the top of the seventh and stepped to the plate down 4-0 in the bottom of the final inning. Stonesifer fanned the first and the second batter reached base off a walk. After a fielder's choice, Assumption's Melissa Jalbert hit a single to right field and put the game-tying run on-deck with two outs for the Greyhounds. Stonesifer then forced a fly out to center field and the Chargers sealed their 33rd win of the season.

Couturier, Tricinelli and Fisher also recorded a hit and RBI in the win. Gelardi went 1-for-2 with two runs and two walks. Brittany Scott (Buena, N.J./Buena Regional) also tallied a hit for UNH.

Stonesifer improved to 15-5 with the win, while Assumption's Jenn Lattal recorded the loss, falling to 7-11 on the season.

The Chargers and Greyhounds are back in action with the regular season-ending doubleheader tomorrow afternoon in Worcester, Mass. Opening pitch of game one is set for 12 p.m.

New Haven has already clinched at least the third seed in the southwest division of the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championship. Depending on compete results from the weekend, UNH can also finish as high as the No. 1 seed in the division.
