Women's Lacrosse Suffers Setback to No. 7 Le Moyne, 16-11

BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Freshman goalkeeper Marissa McDermott (Longmeadow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy) recorded a career-best 11 saves, but the nationally ranked No. 13 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team lost 16-11 to No. 7 Le Moyne College Wednesday afternoon at Kayo Field.

The Chargers dropped to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Dolphins improved to 5-2 on the season and 3-1 in conference play.

New Haven jumped out to an early 3-1 lead at Kayo Field. With 18:11 on the clock, Natalie Lieberman (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) scored her first of five goals on the afternoon. She gave the Chargers a two goal cushion and over the next five minutes the teams exchanged goals to bring the game to 4-2. The momentum then swung in favor of the Dolphins who scored eight unanswered over the next 18 minutes. Le Moyne scored six straight to finish the first half and the first two of the second half to take a commanding 10-4 lead.

Lieberman ended Le Moyne's streak with an unassisted goal at the 25:26 mark of the second stanza. Once again the team's exchanged goals and Courtney Ackland (Perth, Western Australia/Churchlands) brought the score to 11-6 with a free position goal at the 18:11 mark. Le Moyne then went on to score four unanswered and jump out to a 15-6 lead with 14:13 left. The Chargers then went on to score five of the games final six goals, but the lead was too large to overcome for UNH. The Dolphins sealed the win with by killing the clock in their offensive zone in the final five-plus minutes of play.

The Chargers were led defensively by McDermott. She faced 28 total shots, stopped 11 and suffered her first loss of the season. Offensively, Lieberman paced UNH with five goals and one assist. Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) added two goals and one assist.

The Chargers trailed 14-13 in ground balls and 18-11 in draw controls. New Haven was successful on 14-of-17 clear attempts and Le Moyne was good one 13-of-16.

New Haven will return to action on Saturday, April 6 when it travels to Saint Anselm College. Game time in Manchester, N.H. is set for 6 p.m. Saturday night.
