BOX SCORE SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 14 University of New Haven women’s lacrosse team dropped its Northeast-10 Conference Championship semifinal game 15-7 to No. 4 Le Moyne College Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field in Syracuse.
The Chargers were led by
Courtney Ackland (Perth, Western Australia/Churchlands) and
Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) who both scored two goals in the game.
New Haven concludes the 2013 season with a 12-7 overall record, while the Dolphins improved to 15-2 and advance to Sunday’s NE-10 Championship game.
The Dolphins wasted no time taking a lead in the first half and scored just 12 seconds into the game. Over nine minutes later, Le Moyne improved upon the lead with its second and third goals within a 20-second span. The Dolphins lead grew to as big as 5-0 in the opening 13 minutes of the first half before the Chargers put a goal on the scoreboard.
At the 16:19 mark,
Courtney Ackland (Perth, Western Australia/Churchlands) opened scoring for New Haven with a free position goal that cut Le Moyne’s lead back to four. The Dolphins took a 6-1 lead before UNH scored back-to-back unassisted goals. Ackland and
Nicole McKee (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) netted the pair and cut the Dolphins’ lead back to three, 6-3.
Le Moyne then went on a scoring spree during the final 11 minutes of the first half. The Dolphins scored four unanswered goals to take a 10-3 lead with just seconds left in the stanza.
New Haven came out on fire in the second half, scoring three straight to open the period.
Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) scored off a free position shot just over one minute into the second half, while
Kristina Curry (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) and
Natalie Lieberman (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) cut Le Moyne’s lead to 10-6.
With 24:22 on the clock, Kaitlyn Armstrong scored Le Moyne’s first goal of the second half. A Campbell free position goal, broke up another two goals from the Dolphins who took a 13-7 lead with 12:27 left in the second. With 7:07 left, Le Moyne matched its halftime lead with its 14th goal of the afternoon. The Dolphins concluded scoring with 1:54 remaining and sealed a 15-7 victory to advance to the NE-10 Championship game.
New Haven and Le Moyne both won 12 total draw controls, while the Dolphins held a 30-16 advantage in shots. The Chargers were successful on 8-of-8 clear attempts, but Le Moyne held a 14-7 lead in ground balls.
Joining Ackland and Campbell on the stat sheet were McKee, Lieberman and Curry who each recorded one goal. Lieberman added a team-high four draw controls, while McKee and Campbell both added three.
In goal, freshman
Marissa McDermott (Longmeadow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy) tallied the loss in the full 60 minutes. She tallied six saves, including three in each half.
The 2013 season marked the Chargers fifth-straight appearance in NE-10 Championship tournament and it’s first postseason victory since 2009 when the Chargers hosted the conference championship in West Haven.
