The University of New Haven women's soccer team concludes its non-conference schedule and begins the 14-match Northeast-10 slate this week. The Chargers visit No. 21 Dowling on Thursday and entertain NE-10 foe Saint Anselm this Sunday on Kayo Field.
Â
New Haven is 2-0-0 on the young season following a pair of non-conference home wins. The Chargers took a 4-0 victory over NYIT last Thursday and added a 5-2 triumph on Sunday over Dominican. Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) totaled nine points on the week en route to Northeast-10 Player of the Week and NewHavenChargers.com Student-Athlete of the Week laurels.
Â
The Blue and Gold begins the week slotted at No. 6 in the NSCAA Division II East Region rankings, while Dowling is ranked No. 3 regionally in addition to its position on the national ledger. In a similar situation last fall, the unbeaten Chargers hosted and defeated the then-No. 23 Golden Lions, 2-0, on Sept. 6, 2012.
Â
Dowling has matched the Chargers' 2-0-0 start after a pair of 1-0 victories over Bentley and Merrimack this past weekend. The two-time defending East Coast Conference Champions, the Golden Lions wrapped up 2012 in the NCAA Division II East Region Championship Match with a record of 14-4-3.
Â
On Sunday, UNH opens its sixth season of Northeast-10 action against Saint Anselm. Coming off of their most successful NE-10 campaign ever with a sixth-place regular-season finish, the Chargers were tabbed for third in the coaches' preseason poll and garnered one first-place vote. New Haven claimed the most recent meeting with Saint Anselm, picking up a 4-1 decision over the Hawks in Manchester on Sept. 8, 2012.
Â
The Hawks, who were ranked 11th of 15 teams on the preseason ledger, are unbeaten at 1-0-1 following two non-conference showdowns with NE-10 opponents. Saint Anselm played to a 1-1 draw with Stonehill and then earned a 1-0 victory over Saint Michael's this past weekend in Worcester, Mass. at the inaugural Catholic Cup tournament.
Â
The Chargers are looking to repeat last season's 4-0-0 start – the fourth-time in program history that UNH began a campaign with four-consecutive victories. Next week's slate includes a midweek home match with Assumption and a weekend trip to Bentley as Northeast-10 action continues.
