Chargers Erupt With Six Goals, Earn First Victory of 2013

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team doubled its offensive output for the season Saturday afternoon with a 6-3 victory over host Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. 

Freshman Alain Laurent (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) paced the Chargers with two goals, including the game-winner in the 64th minute. The Chargers improved to 1-5-1 overall and 1-2-0 in Northeast-10 Conference play with the win. The Hawks dropped to 2-5-0 overall and 1-4-0 in NE-10 action.

In the 19th minute of the game, JP DiTommaso (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) scored off a hard shot from the middle of the field to put the Chargers ahead 1-0 early. Just under 10 minutes later, Emil Thomsen (Værløse, Denmark/Birkerød Gymnasium) gave the Charges a 2-0 lead with a scored from the top of the box to the right side of the net. The scoring spree continued in the 29th minute whent Matt Dillon (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) scored a goal off a pass from Edwin Carvajal (Norwalk, Conn./Wilton) to put the Chargers ahead 3-0. The Hawks first point of the afternoon came in the 43rd minute off a Zachary Heckt goal. New Haven held on to a 3-1 lead at halftime.

Saint Anselm closed the lead within one in the 61st minute when Heckt found the back of the net once again. Four minutes later, Alain Laurent (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) scored his first of two in the game to put UNH ahead 4-2. Just 78 second later, Eric Robertson (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) gave the Chargers a 5-2 lead when he one-touched the ball into the goal off a pass from Dillon. Laurent added one more, in the 66th minute to give New Haven a commanding 6-2 lead. The Hawks added one more in the 69th minute before the game game to a conclusion with a three-point lead for UNH.

Saint Anselm held a 17-12 lead in shots, including a 9-6 advantage in the second half.

New Haven returns to action at Kayo Field on Wednesday, Oct. 2 when American International travel to West Haven. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
