WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Two goals apiece by Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport) and Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) and a tally from Nicole Pacapelli (West Haven, Conn./West Haven / Stonehill College) led the University of New Haven women's soccer team to a 5-2 victory over visiting Dominican this afternoon on Kayo Field.
With the win, the Chargers improve to 2-0-0 for the second-straight season. New Haven has outscored its opponents by a 9-2 margin thus far in 2013. Dominican drops to 0-1-0.

Simms also assisted on Yanez's first marker to round out a five-point day. Yanez netted two goals for the second-consecutive match, giving her four for the season and climbing to a three-way tie for sixth place all-time at New Haven with 21 career scores.

Natasha Purchla turned away three shots to earn the win between the posts.

New Haven started the scoring in the seventh minute. A corner kick led to a handball in the box, and Simms converted the resulting penalty kick to give the home team a 1-0 advantage.

The Chargers added to their lead less than five minutes later. Simms received a pass on the wing and found Yanez in the box. The senior took one touch and then blasted a shot past Dominican goalkeeper Gina Yanette in the 12th minute.

UNH took its 2-0 edge into the intermission and notched a third marker just 2:02 into the second period. This time it was Yanez setting up Simms, connecting with the junior in the box after a long run to send it into the back of the net.

Dominican climbed back into the contest with two goals in a span of 23 seconds. Both scores came off the foot of Melissa Messina assisted by Danielle Romano as the margin shrank to 3-2 in the 53rd minute.

The Chargers found some breathing room in the 62nd minute when Yanez collected an errant goal kick from Yanette and converted on the open net to extend the tally by to 4-2.

Pacapelli would add an insurance goal in the 68th minute. She dribbled through several defenders before finding a seam from 20-yards out. The one-timer hit twine to run the score to its eventual final of 5-2.

Yanette made 11 saves for the CACC's Chargers from Dominican.

New Haven returns to the pitch on Thursday, Sept. 12, hitting the road for the first time to meet Dowling in Oakdale, N.Y. at 4 p.m. Action at Kayo Field resumes at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15 with the Northeast-10 Conference opener against Saint Anselm.
