Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) and
Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech) both recorded double-doubles to lead the University of New Haven to a commanding 70-51 victory over Assumption Saturday afternoon. Anderson netted a team-high 17 points to go along with 11 rebounds, while James scored 11 and grabbed a game-high 12 boards.
The Chargers clinched their 10th win of the season, improving to 10-4 overall and 5-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Greyhounds fall to 3-11, 1-8 NE-10.
Anderson added four blocks and two assists to his 10th double-double of the year. James tallied his second career double-double, while adding two blocks and a steal to his stat line. With 10 points from the charity stripe,
Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) totaled 14 points, eight assists and four rebounds in the victory.
Ashanti DePass (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) and
Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) rounded out the Chargers in double figures with 14 and 12, respectively.
For the second consecutive game, all five starters scored in double figures. A majority of the points in the final minutes came from the foul line, where UNH attempted 24 more than Assumption. The Chargers went 24-for-34 from the line, while the Greyhounds struggled going 4-for-10. New Haven also shot 42 percent from the floor and 25 percent from beyond the arc.
New Haven wasted no time taking a lead in the cross-divisional matchup. DePass converted a pair of free throws 4:21 into the first half and gave the Chargers a 13-5 lead. Over the next four minutes, New Haven stretched its lead to 10 points, 21-11, after a
Samir McDaniels (Roxbury, Mass./New Mission) layup at the 11:25 mark. The momentum stung in favor of the hosts who went on a 9-2 run to close the UNH lead back to just three points, 23-20, with 7:39 left in the first half. New Haven used a 12-3 run to close the half and secure a 35-23 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Chargers led by as many as 23 which came in the first 5:17. Anderson connected on a three-point bucket with 14:43 on the clock to give New Haven its largest lead of the contest. The Chargers never looked back, despite the Greyhounds narrowly cutting the lead to single digits twice in half. The Hounds went on a 13-1 run to cut the UNH lead to 11 midway through the stanza, but the Chargers held on and connected on the free throw line in the final minutes. New Haven attempted 24 free throws in the second half along, converting 16 attempts.
UNH held a 43-40 rebound advantage as well as a 14-13 lead in points off turnovers. Assumption led 30-28 in points in the paint.
New Haven returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at Saint Michael's College for another Northeast-10 Conference cross divisional contest. Tip-off in Colchester, Vt. is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. New Haven then returns home for a two-game stand against Franklin Pierce and Bentley, starting on Saturday, Jan. 18.
