Men's Basketball Holds On for 67-63 Victory at Stonehill

BOX SCORE EASTON, Mass. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team led by as many as 20 points and held on for a 67-63 victory at Stonehill Saturday afternoon. Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) led the team with 22 points and eight assists, while Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) added 14 points and eight boards.

New Haven improves to 13-5 overall and 8-4 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the cross divisional victory. The Skyhawks drop to 5-12, 2-10 NE-10 with the loss.

Adkins went 5-of-11 from the field and connected on a perfect 11-of-11 from the charity stripe. The senior also grabbed three rebounds. Anderson connected on 6-of-10 shots, including two from long range. Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech) added eight points and was the only player with double digit rebounds with 10.

UNH shot 42 percent from the field, 30 percent from three-point terrirtory and 80 percent from the foul line. New Haven held a 39-37 advantage on the glass, but turned to ball of two more times than the Skyhawks (11-9). The Chargers held a 34-28 lead in points in the paint and a 13-10 advantage in second chance points. Stonehill led 11-10 in points off turnovers, 9-2 in fast break points and 36-10 in points off the bench.

New Haven jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first 3:33 of Saturday's game. The Skyhawks cut the lead back within one point and took their first lead of the game at the 10:58 mark after a trey from Mitch Amelio. The lead exchanged hands three times during a two minute stretch. Stonehill used a 9-0 run to open a 20-12 lead with 6:56 left in the first half. Stonehill's eight-point lead was its largest of the first half as New Haven rallied in the final five minutes. Anderson hit a triple with 4:29 on the clock to spark a 14-2 run by UNH during the final minutes of the first half. James contributed a pair of dunks during the stretch, including a put back slam as time expired in the first half. The Chargers held a 31-26 lead at the break.

In the first five minutes of the second stanza, New Haven went on a 10-4 run and opened an 11-point lead after a pair of Adkins' free throws a the 15:55 mark. The Chargers' run continued with a three-pointer form Ashanti DePass (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) and four free throws from Adkins. Anderson sunk a layup at the 13:02 mark and gave UNH its largest lead of the game, 50-30. During the next 8:08, Stonehill rallied with a remarkable 26-7 run. Pierce Cumpstone converted a jumper with just under five minutes remaining to bring the Skyhawks within one, 57-56. New Haven held on over the final minutes, with help from Adkins' six-straight free throws, for a four-point victory.

New Haven travels to Southern New Hampshire for another NE-10 cross divisional matchup on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m. The Chargers then return to Charger Gymnasium for a pair of NE-10 games against Merrimack and Southern Connecticut State in the first five days of February.
