Chargers Take Two-Point Victory at SNHU, 59-57

BOX SCORE MANCHESTER, N.H. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team used a last minute defensive stand to claim a 59-57 victory at Southern New Hampshire Tuesday night. Leading by as many as seven points in the second half, the Chargers lead diminished at the 1:53 mark when the Penmen knotted the game at 57-57. Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) scored the game-winning layup on the Chargers next possession and rejected a shot on SNHU's final offensive series.

New Haven won its third straight Northeast-10 Conference game, while improving to 14-5 overall and 9-4 in conference action. The Penmen fall to 10-8 overall and 8-7 in NE-10 play.

Anderson finished with 11 points and 16 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the season. Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) added a game-high 14 points and Ashanti DePass (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) added 12 points.

The difference in Tuesday's game was the glass. New Haven held a 40-27 advantage on the boards, including nine offensive rebounds. The Penmen stayed in the game by forcing 19 UNH turnovers and holding a 21-8 lead in points off turnovers.

The Chargers have played close games the entire month and Tuesday marked the fourth straight one-possession game in the final seven seconds.

Southern New Hampshire scored the game's first points in the opening minute and held their only lead of the entire game until the 18:38 mark. The Chargers and Penmen played close through the first five minutes of the half. UNH took the largest lead through the opening 10 minutes when Adkins connected from three-point territory at 11:21. Despite holding the Chargers' lead in single digits most of the half, SNHU went down by 10 when DePass hit a trey with 16 seconds left. SNHU answered with another three-pointer as time expired in the opening period. The Chargers held a 31-24 lead at halftime.

Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) put the Chargers ahead 40-32 with another three-point field goal after 3:26 in the second half. Over the next 1:26, the Penmen went on a 7-0 run to narrow New Haven's lead back to one, 40-39. For the remaining 13 minutes of the second half, New Haven led by no more than seven points. SNHU used a 9-2 run over a five minute stretch to even the game at 57-57 with 1:53 left. Anderson's game-winner came 33 seconds later, but the Penmen had over a minute to even the score once again. Strong defense, including a block by Anderson with 0:08 left, sealed the victory for UNH.

Both teams struggled shooting in the game with New Haven hitting 44.4 percent from the floor and Southern New Hampshire connecting on 40.4 percent. UNH also shot 40 percent from three-point territory and 64.7 percent from the foul line, leading SNHU's numbers of 18.8 percent and 50 percent, respectively.

New Haven returns to Charger Gymnasium for the first of back-to-back home games on Saturday, Feb. 1 against Merrimack at 3:30 p.m. UNH then hosts cross town rival Southern Connecticut State on Wednesday, Feb. 5 in another NE-10 showdown.
