Chargers Run Past Southern New Hampshire, 62-50

BOX SCORE MANCHESTER, N.H. – A season-high 25 points from Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) and a 14-0 run midway through the second half propelled the University of New Haven women's basketball team to a 62-50 victory on Tuesday evening at Southern New Hampshire.

With the win, New Haven improves to 13-6 overall and 8-5 in the Northeast-10. The host Penmen fall to 7-12 on the season with a 5-9 conference mark.

Moore racked up her 25 points on 10-for-16 shooting with two three-pointers and added a trio of free throws. She fell just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds. Cruso and Audrey Cunningham (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) each knocked down two three-pointers en route to nine and eight points, respectively.

Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) scored seven points to go along with 10 rebounds. She shared the game high on the glass with Rykema Stone (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy), who also blocked three shots, as New Haven earned a 46-41 rebounding edge – including 17 offensive boards that resulted in 19 second-chance points.

As a unit, the Chargers shot 23-for-62 (37.1 percent) from the field, 6-for-13 (46.2 percent) from three-point range and 10-for-15 (66.7 percent) from the free throw line.

The Penmen were led by 12 points apiece from Brooke Springfield and Sara Ryan. SNHU shot 16-for-59 (27.1 percent) from the field, 5-for-13 (38.5 percent) from distance and 13-for-17 (76.5 percent) at the stripe.

The home team netted the first four points to attain what would prove to be its largest lead of the contest, as the squads remained close up to a 16-16 deadlock with 5:18 to go in the opening half. A Cruso three-pointer staked the Chargers to a lead they would not relinquish and started the Blue and Gold on a 7-0 run. In total, New Haven ended the half with a 12-2 stretch to take a 28-18 lead into the locker room.

The Penmen shrank the margin down to five points at 35-30 with 15:34 remaining, at which point New Haven clamped down defensively and pulled away from the hosts. The Chargers held Southern New Hampshire without a field goal for a span of 12:26, including an 8:14 stretch without a point of any kind, to open up a 58-35 advantage late in the second half. The Penmen made a late push, but New Haven's lead proved insurmountable as the Chargers rolled to a 62-50 victory.

In the 12-point win, New Haven held its 10th opponent of the season to fewer than 60 points and posted a season-best 16 field goals allowed.

The Chargers return home and wrap-up play against the Northeast-10's Northeast Division on Saturday, Feb. 1 with a 1:30 p.m. visit from Merrimack. All of the action against the Warriors will be broadcast live in high definition and free of charge at NewHavenChargers.com.
