Last Time Out
New Haven earned its third consecutive win, capping the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 69-56 win over visiting Molloy on Saturday, Jan. 4.
Â
Aquillin Hayes posted her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with four assists, three steals and a blocked shot.
Â
Briana Bradford led all players with 17 points off the New Haven bench, shooting 6-for-10 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free throw line.
Â
New Haven shot 14-for-28 (50 percent) from the floor in the second half to spark its surge to victory.
Â
Jasmine Gibson distributed a career-high five assists, and Rykema Stone posted a career-best five blocked shots.
Â
The game was tied at halftime, 30-30, and the deadlock held to a 43-43 tally. At that point, the Chargers scored 12 straight points and kept Molloy off the board for five minutes to build a lead that they would not relinquish.
Â
The 56 points scored by the Lions marks the sixth time this season that New Haven has limited its opponent to fewer than 60 points. The Chargers are 5-1 in those contests, with the lone defeat coming by a score of 55-50 in overtime at No. 17 Rollins.
Â
New Haven Notes
At 9-3, New Haven is off to its best 12-game start since the 2006-07 campaign. The Chargers began that season at 12-3 and finished 25-6 en route to their second consecutive NYCAC/ECC Championship.
Â
The Chargers rank fourth in the Northeast-10 with 61.2 points per game allowed and lead the NE-10 with an opponents' field goal percentage of 35.5 percent. Led by 19 rejections by Rykema Stone, the Blue and Gold are also third in the NE-10 with 3.8 blocks per game. Offensively, New Haven slots third in the conference with a 39.5 percent success rate from three-point range.
Â
Including her most recent performance with 10 points and 14 rebounds in Saturday's win over Molloy, Aquillin Hayes has recorded five double-doubles this season. Hayes, who posted a team-leading seven double-doubles last winter, averages 10.8 points and a conference-best 10.8 rebounds per game.
Â
Hayes has two career games with at least 20 rebounds, including the November overtime contest at No. 17 Rollins. She hauled in 21 boards to go along with 12 points and eight blocks in a win over Le Moyne last winter.
Â
This season, Briana Bradford has surpassed 20 points in three games en route to a team-high 15.4 points per contest. She scored a career-high 24 points with five three-pointers in the Nov. 13 win over Saint Rose. Bradford also drained five from beyond the arc en route to 21 points in the conference win at Pace on Nov. 23. She most recently scored 17 points off the bench to lead all scorers
Â
Bria Moore has scored in double figures in nine games this winter, including a streak of seven outings in a row from Nov. 26 through Dec. 22. She averages 12.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per contest and has provided a spark from long range, shooting 17-for-38 (44.7 percent). Moore scored a season-high 20 points against Adelphi on Dec. 7.
Â
Rykema Stone's double-double against Saint Michael's on Dec. 20 added to a breakout winter for the junior. She currently averages 9.4 points and 6.3 rebounds while ranking second in the Northeast-10 with 1.6 blocks per contest.
Â
The Chargers have knocked down eight or more three-pointers in four games this season, including 10 treys in the Nov. 13 win over Saint Rose. For the season, the Blue and Gold have connected on 64-of-162 attempts (39.5 percent) from beyond the arc to rank third in the Northeast-10 in three-point efficency.
Â
With 89 career three-pointers to her credit, Audrey Cunningham has climbed to ninth on the Chargers' all-time list. She is one trey shy of tying Moe Stevens (1992-96) for eighth place and with 11 more triples would become the sixth player to knock down 100 attempts from distance for the Blue and Gold.
Â
The three teams that have defeated the Chargers this winter (American International, Rollins, Adelphi) are a combined 32-5. The Panthers and Tars are both currently ranked in the USA Today Sports Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll at No. 13 and No. 14, respectively.
Â
The Chargers' 4-0 start was the first for the program since the 1989-90 team won its first six outings. The Blue and Gold also began at 3-0 in the conference for the first time since 2009-10.
Â
Prior to the season-opening win at Dominican and the Nov. 30 loss at Rollins, New Haven last played an overtime game on Jan. 2, 2011 at crosstown and Northeast-10 rival Southern Connecticut State (L, 60-54). The Chargers last won in an extra session prior to this season on Jan. 26, 2010 at Southern New Hampshire (W, 67-65).
Â
The Nov. 29 win over Davis & Elkins was the first New Haven victory outside of the East Region since a 72-67 win at Lynn in Boca Raton, Fla. on Dec. 20, 2009.
