Opening Tip
The University of New Haven men's basketball team returns home to Charger Gymnasium looking to complete the season sweep of Pace. New Haven upended the host Setters, 73-62, on Nov. 23.

Last Time Out
Jeffery Adkins' layup with 1.1 seconds to go propelled New Haven to a 61-60 win at Le Moyne on Tuesday evening.

Eric Anderson scored a team-high 14 points for the Chargers, and Justin Exum added 13 with three three-pointers.

Ashanti DePass also connected on three triples, including a trey in the final minute to pull New Haven within one at 60-59. DePass finished with 11 points.

The Chargers committed three turnovers - tying the season-low by a Northeast-10 team this season.

The win marked the latest that New Haven has trailed in an eventual victory as well as the largest deficit overcome by the Chargers (10 points) in a win this season. The Chargers led for a total of 8.1 seconds in the second half.

The Blue and Gold recorded their 10th true road win of the season, tying the mark set by the 2003-04 squad (10-5) for the most road victories in the past 20 campaigns.

For the first time this season, New Haven earned a win despite being both outrebounded (38-27) and shooting at a lower percentage from the field (43.8-34.0) than its opponent.

With three games remaining in the regular season, New Haven controls its own destiny for second place in the Northeast-10 Southwest Division, which entails a home game in the NE-10 Championship Quarterfinals.

New Haven Notes
Through games played Feb. 13, New Haven ranks fifth in Division II with 62.7 points allowed per game. The Chargers also slot ninth in the nation in fewest turnovers committed per contest (9.8) and 13th in field goal percentage defense (39.9 percent). The Blue and Gold lead the NE-10 in all three categories and have also committed the fewest fouls per game in all of Division II with just 14.0 infractions per contest.

The Chargers have held 22 of 23 opponents, including their last 20, below their current 2013-14 scoring average. The New Haven defensive effort has limited 12 teams to 60 points or fewer.

On the offensive end, the Blue and Gold shot 50 percent or better from the field in six contests this winter. New Haven's most efficient effort was a 27-for-49 (55.1 percent) performance in the Nov. 26 win at American International. The Chargers also buried 8-of-16 attempts from beyond the arc in the 74-52 triumph over the Yellow Jackets in Springfield.

New Haven's 10-3 road record marks only the second time in the past 20 seasons that the Chargers have won 10 true road games. The Blue and Gold have won at least seven contests with a winning record on the road in each of the last three seasons after a stretch of seven consecutive sub-.500 campaigns away from Charger Gymnasium from 2004-11.

Jeffery Adkins most recently netted eight points in Tuesday's win at Le Moyne to improve his career mark to 1,176 points and climb to 23rd all-time in scoring at New Haven. This season, Adkins is averaging a team-leading 15.8 points and 4.4 assists per contest this season while shooting 50.6 percent (124-245) from the floor and 82 percent (91-111) from the free throw line. He has also moved into fifth all-time in assists at New Haven with 370 and 12th place in career steals at 126.
Justin Exum has improved his New Haven program record to 275 treys. He ranks fifth among all active Division II student-athletes and 15th across all NCAA divisions in made three-pointers. Exum's career .373 shooting percentage from distance is the eighth-best in program history.

Exum also ranks 12th all-time in scoring at New Haven with 1,524 career points. The Chargers' third-leading scorer this season with 14.9 points per game, he is 103 tallies shy of the program's all-time top 10. Exum most recently scored 13 points in Tuesday's win at Le Moyne.

With Adkins joining Exum in the 33-member 1,000-Point Club at New Haven this season, the Chargers boast two active 1,000-point scorers for the first time since Jamaal Brooks (1,248) and Ismael Caro (1,099) shared the court in the 2003-04 campaign.

Eric Anderson could also reach the 1,000-point plateau during 2013-14; the junior has accumulated 985 career points for the Blue and Gold. The most recent trio of active teammates in the 1,000-Point Club consisted of Brian Smith (1,936), Mike Grove (1,589) and Dwane Crawford (1,095) in the 1992-93 season.

This winter, Anderson averages 15.7 points and ranks second in the Northeast-10 with 11.3 rebounds per game. The reigning NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year, who ranks second in the conference with 2.57 blocks per contest, is eighth in the nation on the boards and 17th in rejections. Anderson has posted 14 double-doubles this season.

In the midst of his junior season, Anderson has moved into second all-time at New Haven with 181 rejections. He recently surpassed Bill Jeffress for second place and stands 10 blocks shy of the 191 shots turned away by Herb Watkins. Both Jeffress and Watkins suited up for the Chargers from 1984-88.

Anderson's 71 blocks in 2012-13 were the second-most in a single-season in Charger history, tied with Jeffress and two shy of Watkins' program-record 73 rejections. He has 59 blocked shots to date in 2013-14, which is the sixth-highest single-season total in the New Haven record books.

Cyrus James has recorded the first two double-doubles of his career this season. He is New Haven's most-efficient scorer at 59-for-107 (55.1 percent) from the floor en route to 6.1 points to go along with 8.1 rebounds per game. James ranks seventh in the NE-10 in both rebounding and blocked shots (1.26 bpg).

In his first season as a member of the starting lineup, Ashanti DePass is netting 10.0 points per game. The senior leads the team with 47 made three-pointers and converts 37.6 percent of his attempts from distance while playing 33.0 minutes per outing.

Fourth-year head coach Ted Hotaling stands at 59-47 at New Haven (and in his career) following Saturday's meeting at Saint Rose. He ranks fifth all-time in wins on the Chargers' sidelines and his .557 winning percentage is third in New Haven history.

Of the nine head coaches in New Haven men's basketball history, eight of them have coached at least 100 games for the Chargers. Hotaling's 55-45 mark through 100 contests was the best since Stu Grove went 63-37 en route to a program-record 253 wins from 1980-1995. Don Ormrod leads the list with an 85-15 mark while leading New Haven's first five varsity seasons and finished his tenure at 124-22 with a program-best .849 winning percentage from 1961-67.

In The Northeast-10
Southern Connecticut State (14-2 NE-10) has clinched the Northeast-10 Southwest Division crown. At 11-6, New Haven controls its own destiny for second place in the division and a home game in the Northeast-10 Championship Quarterfinal Round. The winner of Saturday's game featuring Le Moyne (10-7) and Saint Rose (9-8) will remain within striking distance of the Chargers down the stretch.

In the NE-10 Northeast, Franklin Pierce and Saint Anselm stand atop the division with identical 13-4 conference records. The Ravens took the first meeting at home on Dec. 7, and the squads meet again in Manchester on Saturday. Saint Michael's trails by two games at 11-6; the Purple Knights own the tiebreaker over the Ravens by virtue of a home-and-home sweep but dropped both of their contests against the Hawks.

Up Next
New Haven hosts American International in the final home game of the regular season on Wednesday, Feb. 19. The Chargers will recognize seniors Jeffery Adkins, Ashanti DePass, Justin Exum and Krystian Foriest and graduate student Kevin McLaughlin prior the 7:30 p.m. contest.
