Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) connected on a pair of free throws with 15 second remaining to push the University of New Haven men's basketball over Adelphi University 70-67 Tuesday night in it final game of the 2013-14 regular season. The Chargers earned the No. 2 seed in the Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division and will host Saint Michael's on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. in the NE-10 Championship Quarterfinals.
New Haven finished the regular season by winning four-straight to secure a 19-7 overall record and a 14-6 mark in the Northeast-10 Conference. Adelphi finishes the season at 5-21 overall and 3-17 in conference play.Â
Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) recorded 17 points and 17 rebounds in his 17th double-double of the season. Exum finished with 17 points and six rebounds, while
Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) added 16 points and six assists.
The Chargers out-rebounded Adelphi 36-30 and were on the better side of a 10-7 turnover differential. UNH trailed in shooting from the field (48 percent - 40 percent) and from three-point territory (37.5 percent - 22.7 percent), but the Chargers held a 73.1 percent to 65 percent advantage in free throw shooting.
The Panthers scored the first points of the game and controlled the lead for most of the game. Adelphi scored 15 of the first 20 points and opened a 10-point lead in the first 5:19. The Panthers led by as many as 16 points in the first half when Matthew Citron hit a jumper at the 10:48 mark. New Haven continued to trail by double figures until the final two minutes of the first half. The Chargers used a 10-3 run to close the opening half and cut the deficit to seven, 35-28, at the first horn.
Adelphi continued to lead throughout the first five minutes of the second half, but the Chargers closed the gap. At the 14:11 mark, Exum hit a pair of free throws to give New Haven its first lead of the game. Adkins followed with a layup to finish a 14-6 run for UNH to open the second half. The lead changed teams four different times in the final 13:30. New Haven led by as many as five points, while the Panthers led by six at the 2:04 mark. Adelphi went on a 15-4 run to go ahead 63-57 after an Ethan Hamlet three pointer. New Haven finished the game on its own 13-4 run to seal the victory. The Chargers made 9-of-9 free throw attempts in the final minutes with both Adkins and Exum going a perfect 4-for-4.
The win at Adelphi is the first for UNH since joining the Northeast-10 Conference in 2008-09 and the first since 2006-07. With the win, the Chargers also earned their 11th road win, their most since an 11-3 road mark in 1987-88.
New Haven will host the NE-10 Northeast Division No. 3 seed Saint Michael's in Sunday's quarterfinal matchup. The game will be the second of a NE-10 Championship doubleheader at Charger Gymnasium and tip-off is set for 4 p.m. against the Purple Knights.
