Opening Tip
The University of New Haven women's basketball team hosts a Northeast-10 Championship Quarterfinal for the first time in program history with a visit from Assumption. The Chargers are the No. 2 seed in the NE-10 Southwest, and the Greyhounds are the Northeast Division's third-seeded club.
Â
Chargers in the NE-10 Championship
The Chargers are entering their second consecutive Northeast-10 postseason and their fourth in six seasons as a member of the conference. Last winter, sixth-seeded New Haven earned a bye into the Quarterfinal Round for the first time, falling at third-seeded Assumption. The Blue and Gold won First Round games in 2008-09 and 2009-10.
Â
A win over Assumption would mark New Haven's first-ever trip to the NE-10 Semifinals.
Â
Last Time Out
New Haven erased a 17-point second-half deficit to clip host Adelphi, 85-81, on Tuesday in the Chargers' regular-season finale.
Â
Aquillin Hayes scored 18 of her 27 points in the second half. She matched her career high in points fueled by 10-for-17 shooting from the floor and a 7-for-8 day at the stripe.
Â
Briana Bradford added 15 points, and Bria Moore scored 14.
Â
Ashley LeBlanc neared a double-double off the bench with eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Hayes and Bradford dished out three assists apiece.
Â
The Chargers shot 16-for-31 (51.6 percent) from the floor in the second half en route to their largest comeback of the season. The contest marked the fifth time that New Haven has overcome a double-digit deficit in an eventual victory.
Â
New Haven Notes
At 18-8 overall, the Chargers have reached their highest win total since a 21-9 record during the 2007-08 campaign. New Haven won the East Coast Conference regular season title in that season, which was the program's last prior to joining the Northeast-10. Despite playing two fewer conference games this winter, the Chargers' 13 NE-10 wins match the program record established last season.
Â
Ty Grace has already registered one of the largest improvements by a first-year head coach on the Chargers' sidelines. With an NCAA East Region Championship berth in striking distance for the Blue and Gold, Grace could become the fifth first-year coach to take the Chargers to the national postseason and the third to do so with a team that did not reach the NCAAs in the previous campaign.
Â
In terms of win total and win percentage, the largest improvement by a first-year coach was courtesy of Mimi Walters, who led New Haven to a 20-10 record and NCAA postseason appearance in 2002-03 after taking the reins of a club that finished 11-15 in 2001-02.
Â
Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year and Second Team All-NE-10 honoree Aquillin Hayes has recorded 10 double-doubles en route to a team-high 14.9 points per contest and ranks second in the Northeast-10 with 10.2 rebounds per game. Hayes, who posted a team-leading seven double-doubles last winter, reached a career-high 27 points for the third time this season in Tuesday's win at Adelphi. She is the only player in the Northeast-10 to lead her team in points, rebounds and assists (2.4 apg).
Â
Hayes also has two career games with at least 20 rebounds, including the November overtime contest at No. 17 Rollins. She hauled in 21 boards to go along with 12 points and eight blocks in a win over Le Moyne last winter.
Â
On Feb. 10, Hayes became the first Charger to earn Northeast-10 Player of the Week laurels since Helin Marte shared the honor with Bentley's Kim Brennan on Feb. 1, 2010. Nikki Carroll also garnered an NE-10 Player of the Week nod on Dec. 22, 2008 during New Haven's first season as a member of the conference.
Â
New Haven has limited 11 opponents to fewer than 60 points this winter, including a season-low 43 tallies surrendered to Davis & Elkins on Nov. 29. Opponents have been held to a conference-low 36.0 field goal percentage as well as a 32.4 three-point percentage while committing an average of 15.8 turnovers per game against the Blue and Gold's defensive pressure.
Â
The Chargers rank fourth in the Northeast-10 with 63.0 points allowed per game. Offensively, UNH slots sixth in the NE-10 with 69.8 points per game.
Â
On five occasions, New Haven has overcome a double-digit deficit en route to victory. Most recently, the Chargers erased a 17-point deficit in the second half to defeat host Adelphi, 85-81, on Feb. 25.
Â
Bria Moore has scored in double figures in 15 games this winter, including a streak of seven outings in a row from Nov. 26 to Dec. 22. The 2011-12 Northeast-10 Rookie of the Year averages 11.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per contest this season. For her career, she is 89 points shy of becoming the 16th member of the Chargers' 1,000-Point Club.
Â
This season, Briana Bradford has surpassed 20 points in five games en route to 13.1 points per contest. She scored a career-high 24 points with five three-pointers in the Nov. 13 win over Saint Rose. Bradford also drained five from beyond the arc en route to 21 points in the conference win at Pace on Nov. 23. She was named Honorable Mention All-Northeast-10 this season and merited an NE-10 All-Rookie Team selection last winter.
Â
Audrey Cunningham is the sixth Charger to knock down 100 treys in her career. She currently stands in fifth-place all-time with 102 three-pointers. Cunningham is in the midst of her third active season with the Blue and Gold. Becky Snow is the program's all-time leader with 235 triples during her Hall of Fame tenure with the Chargers from 1996 to 2000.
Â
The eight teams that have defeated the Chargers this winter currently boast a combined record of 145-63 (.697). Among those teams, Bentley is the unbeaten No. 1 ranked team in Division II at 26-0, while Rollins (22-5) checks in at No. 14. Additionally, Stonehill and Adelphi have both been nationally ranked during the 2013-14 campaign.
Â
The Chargers' 4-0 start was the first for the program since the 1989-90 team won its first six outings. The Blue and Gold also began at 3-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference for the first time since 2009-10.
Â
In the NCAA East Region Rankings
New Haven remained at No. 8 in the most recent NCAA East Region Rankings as released on Wednesday by the national office.
Â
The top two spots in the rankings remained the same as unbeaten and nationally-ranked No. 1 Bentley tops the ledger followed by fellow Northeast-10 squad Adelphi. Stonehill improved to No. 3 in the rankings followed by East Coast Conference representatives LIU Post and District of Columbia.
Â
Assumption, which will visit Charger Gymnasium on Sunday, and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference frontrunner Philadelphia round out the seven teams slotted ahead of the Chargers. After New Haven at No. 8, American International and Queens (N.Y.) complete the top 10.
Â
The week's ledger reflects games played through Sunday, Feb. 23 and does not include midweek action that most notably saw New Haven defeat Adelphi in addition to wins by Bentley, Assumption, American International and Queens against unranked opponents. Stonehill and Philadelphia were both beaten by unranked foes on Tuesday.
Â
Up Next
