BOX SCORE ALBANY, N.Y. – Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) scored 15 of his game-high 25 points in the second half as the University of New Haven trimmed a 14-point Saint Rose lead down to just three on Saturday afternoon, but the host Golden Knights ultimately held on for a 78-74 decision.
Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) added 19 points for New Haven.
Â
Following the loss, the Chargers move to 15-7 overall with a 10-6 record in Northeast-10 play. Saint Rose improves to 12-10 with a 9-7 conference mark after salvaging a split of the home-and-home divisional series. New Haven won the first meeting, 69-56, at Charger Gymnasium on Dec. 10.
Â
Anderson's 25 points came on 10-for-16 shooting with one three-pointer and a 4-for-5 day at the free throw line. Exum knocked down four three-pointers on his way to 19 points.
Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) and
Ashanti DePass (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) also scored in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Adkins also distributed seven assists.
Â
Collectively, the Chargers shot 27-for-59 (45.8 percent) from the field, 7-for-23 (30.4 percent) from beyond the arc and 13-for-19 (68.4 percent) from the free throw line.
Â
Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech) pulled down eight rebounds to go along with his four points. New Haven was outrebounded, 36-29, and committed 10 turnovers while forcing nine Saint Rose giveaways.
Â
Dominykas Milka posted 24 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Knights, and Kareem Thomas and Tyler Sayre added 19 points apiece.
Â
Saint Rose shot 21-for-34 (61.8 percent) from the floor in the first half to construct the lead that it would hold for most of the contest. The Chargers built a 10-5 advantage over the opening four minutes of the game, but the Golden Knights netted the next 10 points to gain control of the action. An Anderson three-point play and a Adkins layup knotted the game at 15-15 with 12:26 to play. However, New Haven would convert just one field goal over the next 6:39 as the hosts climbed in front by a double-digit margin for the first time. Saint Rose continued to put points of the board for the remainder of the half to take a 48-36 lead into the intermission.
Â
A Milka jumper started the second half and staked the Golden Knights to a game-high 14-point lead, but New Haven kept pace with Saint Rose in the second frame out to a 66-55 deficit with 8:47 to go. At that point, four different Chargers scored during an 8-0 run that closed the gap to a single possession at 66-63 with 5:05 remaining in regulation. However, Saint Rose was perfect from the line at 6-for-6 during the final five minutes and corralled seven of nine rebounds – including four from the offensive glass – to hold on for a 78-74 victory.
Â
The Chargers continue their NE-10 Southwest Division road swing with a pivotal trip to Le Moyne on Tuesday, Feb. 11. New Haven currently shares second place in the division with the Dolphins, who dropped a 97-75 decision at Southern Connecticut State this afternoon. Tip-off from Syracuse is set for 7 p.m.
