Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) scored seven points and
Nicole McKee (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) netted five goals to lead the nationally ranked No. 13 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team to a 15-5 home-opening victory over Southern Connecticut State University Tuesday afternoon at Kayo Field.
Campbell also tied the program's single-game record with nine draw controls in the victory. She tied three other Chargers with the single-game mark - Ashley Ferrandiz (vs. Franklin Pierce, 4/12/12), Natalie Lieberman (at Assumption, 3/23/11) and Kristine Lambracht (at Bentley, 4/6/07).
The Chargers improve to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Southern Connecticut State drops to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
New Haven held a 36-16 advantage in shots and a 13-9 advantage on the draw. The Chargers were also successful on 16-of-18 clear attempts, while holding SCSU to just 13-of-20 clears. The Owls owned a slight (23-21) lead in ground balls.
UNH registered four players with hat tricks in the win - Campbell, McKee and a pair of freshmen
Nicole Belanger (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and Caitlin O'Brien. McKee's five goals led the team, while the other three all netted a trio.
Marissa Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) also finished with multiple points with a goal and three assists. Additionally,
Alicia Busco (Agawam, Mass./Agawam) handed out a pair of assists and
Corinne Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) contributed one helper.
UNH Goalkeeper
Alyssa Gianotti (Monkton, Md./Hereford) improved to 2-0 on the season with five saves in all 60 minutes in the net.
Southern Connecticut State was led by Sarah Cebry and Sarah Muise who both scored two goals in the loss. In goal, Vanessa Pagano made 10 saves.
The Owls were first to strike when Cebry buried an unassisted goal just over three minutes into the first half. New Haven then went on a 6-0 run over the next 13 minutes. During the run, Campbell scored all three of her goals and McKee scored two. SCSU and New Haven exchanged three goals in the final 12 minutes of the first half and the Chargers held a 7-3 lead at halftime.
Belanger gave New Haven another five-goal lead 3:27 into the second half with her third goal of the game and fourth of the season. Her score started another 6-0 run for the Chargers who opened a 13-3 lead with 16:52 left in the game. McKee scored her fifth of the game at that time off a pass from Campbell. Southern Connecticut State's Sarah Muise broke up another two goals by the Chargers in the final 10 minutes. O'Brien scored two of her three in the closing minutes as UNH opened a 15-4 lead with 7:20 remaining. The Owls' Jennifer McCarthy scored one more in the final minute to bring the final score within 10.
New Haven returned to Kayo Field one more time before heading south for a pair of non-conference matchups in Maryland. The Chargers host Franklin Pierce on Thursday, March 13 in an NE-10 game at Kayo Field set to start at 4 p.m.
