No. 13 Women's Lacrosse Downs Franklin Pierce, 14-3

BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Freshman Nicole Belanger (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) scored four goals on five shots and led the nationally ranked No. 13 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team to a 14-3 victory over Franklin Pierce Thursday afternoon at a cold and windy Kayo Field.

With the win, New Haven improves to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Ravens drop to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in the NE-10.

Junior Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) added three goals and two assists for five total points. Marissa Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) added three points off two goals and one assist, while Nicole McKee (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) scored two. Both Courtney Ackland (Perth, Western Australia/Churchlands) and Maya Szymanski (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) scored one goal and handed out one assist. Corinne Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) rounded out scoring with one goal.

Campbell also added six draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers in the win. Defensively, Alyssa Gianotti (Monkton, Md./Hereford) earned the win with five saves and one goal against. Marissa McDermott (Longmeadow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy) also saw time in the net with one save.

Madeline Shopshire scored two of the Ravens' three goals off six shots.

As a team, New Haven led 26-15 in shots and 15-4 in draw controls. New Haven completed 14-of-17 clear attempts, while Franklin Pierce managed just 12-of-21.

In the first half, New Haven controlled ball possession for a majority of the 30 minutes. The Chargers scored the game's first 10 goals in the opening 23 minutes. During the stretch, Campbell scored all three of her goals, while Belanger netted three of her four scores. Campbell assisted on one Belanger goal and Ackland's first point of the season. With 7:47 on the clock, Campbell scored New Haven's 10th of the half to put the Chargers ahead by double figures. Shopshire stopped the New Haven run with an unassisted goal at the 3:32 mark. McKee added one more from Devon Previte (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) with 2:47 left in the first half to give the Chargers an 11-1 halftime advantage.

New Haven began the second half with three unanswered goals from Belanger and the Fisher sisters to open up a 14-1 lead at the 14:36 mark. The Ravens added two in the final 10 minutes and the score was final at 14-3.

The Chargers head south to escape the cold temperatures of New England for a pair of neutral site contests this weekend. UNH takes on Grand Valley State on Saturday, March 15 in Arnold, Md. on the campus of Anne Arundel Community College. Opening draw is scheduled for 3 p.m. The Chargers will then take on Pfeiffer on Sunday, March 16 at 3:30 p.m. before returning north.
