Chargers Advance to NE-10 Championship Semifinals with 83-65 Win over Saint Michael’s

BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) recorded 19 points and 19 rebounds to lead the University of New Haven men's basketball team to an 83-65 win over visiting Saint Michael's in a Northeast-10 Championship Quarterfinal on Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium. Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) matched Anderson with 19 points for the Chargers.

With the win, New Haven improves to 20-7 and advances to the NE-10 Championship Semifinals for the first time in six seasons as a member of the conference. The Chargers, who will continue the postseason at Saint Anselm on Wednesday, also secured their second consecutive 20-win campaign. Saint Michael's falls to 18-9 after the defeat.

Anderson shot 9-for-13 from the field and 1-for-2 from the free throw line to rack up his 19 points. His season-high 19 rebounds were the most by a Charger since Anderson corralled 20 at American International during the 2012-13 slate. The two-time Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year also picked up three blocked shots in addition to his 18th double-double for the season.

As a unit, the Chargers went 30-for-62 (48.4 percent) from the floor and knocked down a season-best 11 three-pointers as a part of an 11-for-29 (37.9 percent) showing from distance. New Haven was also 12-for-15 (80 percent) from the free throw line to round out its 83-point performance.

Adkins also distributed six assists to go along with his 19 points. All five starters scored in double figures as Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) poured in 13 points while Ashanti DePass (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) and Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech) each netted 11. Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) posted nine points off the bench on 3-for-3 shooting from downtown, and Jonny Ocasio (Queens, N.Y./Charlotte (Fla.) / Hillsborough Community College) added a free throw.

The Chargers held a 42-30 rebounding advantage as 12 offensive boards led to 20 New Haven second-chance points. Each club committed six turnovers.

Mike Thompson scored a team-best 17 points for the Purple Knights.

All of the game's three ties and 10 lead changes came over the game's first 14 minutes, culminating with an Anderson offensive rebound and bucket that staked the Blue and Gold to a 23-22 advantage. The putback started New Haven on a 15-0 run that included three-pointers from Adkins, Exum and DePass as the Chargers built a 36-22 lead. Saint Michael's ended the stretch with the final five points of the period, and New Haven headed into the intermission with a 36-27 lead.

A 7-0 run over a span of less than two minutes turned a 49-41 edge into a 56-41 cushion at the 12:46 mark of the second half, and the Purple Knights never climbed back within single digits. The run continued to 21-7 in total, punctuated by a transition dunk by James, and New Haven rolled to an 83-65 win.

The Chargers will travel to Saint Anselm to meet the Hawks, who are the top-seeded team from the NE-10 Northeast-10 and survived with a 79-78 home win over Bentley this afternoon. Tip-off from Manchester, N.H. is set for Wednesday, March 5 at 7 p.m. The regular season meeting between the pair went down to the wire, with Saint Anselm claiming an 85-83 decision on an overtime buzzer beater on Jan. 8.
