BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Led by a pair of seven-point performances from
Nicole McKee (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) and
Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield), the nationally ranked No. 10 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team defeated No. 9 Stonehill College 16-7 Saturday afternoon at Kayo Field. McKee anchored the Chargers' attack with six goals and one assist, while Campbell added four goals and three assists.
The Chargers improve their season-opening winning streak to six games, while standing at 3-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Skyhawks fall to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
Both McKee and Campbell also boasted impressive all-around games for the Chargers. Campbell added eight draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers, while McKee contributed five draw controls, three ground balls and one caused turnover.
Courtney Ackland (Perth, Western Australia/Churchlands) chipped in with two goals and three assists.
Nicole Belanger (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon),
Marissa Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) and
Maya Szymanski (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) also scored multiple points in the victory. Szymanski scored one and dished out three, Belanger scored two and Fisher boasted one of each.
Seven different players scored goals for the Skyhawks, while both Lizzie Lane and Rebecca Matheson registered a goal and an assist.
Defensively, goalkeeper
Alyssa Gianotti (Monkton, Md./Hereford) tallied eight saves in her sixth win of the season.
Brittany Ast (Glenwood, N.J./Vernon Township) forced four turnovers, while
Samantha Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) added one caused turnover.
The Chargers controlled the game from the onset and boasted a 17-8 advantage in draw controls helped them maintain the lead throughout the game. UNH also swarmed to the ball, grabbed 20-of-32 ground balls. New Haven was also 12-for-13 on clear attempts, while holding Stonehill to 14-for-19.Â
Just 50-second in, Szymanski put the Chargers ahead with a free position goal, her fourth of the season. Marissa Fisher found Ackland at the 21:48 mark to give UNH a 2-0 lead. Kelsey Shannahan scored Stonehill's first goal at 19:02, but the Chargers' lead would improve. Ackland scored her fifth of the season and McKee scored her first two of the game over the next eight minutes. McKee's two goals came just 17-second apart and gave the Chargers a 5-1 lead with 11:36 left in the first half. The Skyhawks scored one more in the first, while New Haven added four before the break. Belanger and McKee both scored man-up goals before Fisher and Campbell increased the lead to seven in the final minute. The Mansfield, Mass. native scored her 14th goal of the season with 11 seconds left to give UNH a 9-2 halftime lead.
Belanger's second goal of the game began scoring in the second half and put UNH ahead by eight. Lane scored Stonehill's third goal at the 24:30 mark, while the Chargers rattled off another three unanswered to take a 10-point lead at the 20:51 mark. The Skyhawks scored four of the next five goals to close the UNH lead down to seven points, 14-7, with just under five minutes left in the second half. Campbell and McKee capped the win with their 17th and 20th goals of the season, respectively.
The victory was New Haven's first over the Skyhawks since 2009 when the Chargers defeated then-ranked No. 8 Stonehill 10-9 in Easton, Mass. It also marked the largest margin of victory for UNH over Stonehill as both the previous New Haven wins came by just one point.
After playing their first three NE-10 games at home, the Chargers hit the road for one non-conference and back-to-back conference battles over the next 11 days. UNH travels to No. 14 Dowling on Wednesday, March 26 followed by Bentley on Saturday, March 29 and No. 5 Le Moyne on Wednesday, April 2. New Haven returns home on Saturday, April 5 when Saint Anselm travels to Kayo Field.
