No. 12 Women's Lacrosse Opens Season with Win Over Molloy, 15-3

BOX SCORE BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. - Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) netted three goals and dished out two assists to lead the nationally ranked No. 12 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team to a 15-3 non-conference victory over Molloy in the team's season opener Tuesday night. Originally scheduled to be played on the Molloy College campus, the game was moved to the campus of Dowling College because of poor field conditions. Nine different Chargers scored in the victory, while two freshmen posted their first collegiate points.

The season-opening victory is the seventh consecutive for the Chargers and the fourth-straight season opening win over Molloy. The Lions dropped to 1-1 on the season with the loss.

Campbell added three draw controls and a ground ball to her stat line as well. Marissa Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) added three goals in her senior year debut. Nicole McKee (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur), Corinne Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) and Ashley Travis (LaFayette, N.Y./LaFayette ) each tallied two points. McKee and Fisher both scored a pair of goals, while Travis recorded one goal and one assist. Hannah Johnson (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and Nicole Belanger (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) registered their first collegiate goals in the first game of the season, while Maya Szymanski (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) and Alicia Busco (Agawam, Mass./Agawam) each added on goal. Szymanski chipped in five ground balls and two draw controls as well.

In goal for UNH, sophomore Alyssa Gianotti (Monkton, Md./Hereford) recorded the win with five saves in the game.

The Chargers held a narrow 11-9 advantage in draw controls and a larger 33-13 advantage in shots. The UNH defense was strong, forcing 16 Molloy turnovers. On the other side, the Chargers took care of the ball and turned the ball over just four times. New Haven was successful on 16-of-17 clear attempts, while Molloy took 12-of-16 clears to the offensive end.

After nearly six scoreless minutes to begin the first half, Marissa Fisher broke the tie at 24:15. Just 3:45 later, Corinne Fisher scored the Chargers second goal after Caitlin O'Brien hit the post on her second attempt of the game. The Lions broke the shutout with a Casey Naab goal at 19:39, but UNH went ahead by two just seconds later with Campbell's first goal of the season. A long break came before New Haven scored three more goals in the final five minutes of the first half. Belanger, Syzmanski and Travis put the Chargers ahead 7-1 at halftime.

McKee opened scoring in the first two minutes of the second half and the Chargers never looked back. Corinne Fisher scored her second with 12:06 left to put the Chargers ahead 13-1. Molloy's Katie O'Brien scored the team's second goal 1:40 later. Marissa Fisher and Busco added late goals for UNH, while the Lions managed one additional for a 15-3 final.

New Haven returns to action and opens its Northeast-10 Conference schedule on Tuesday, March 11 at Southern Connecticut State. Game time at Jess Dow Field is set for 7 p.m. in New Haven, Conn.
