BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Led by three players with four total points, the nationally ranked No. 4 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team defeated visiting Assumption College 14-4 Wednesday afternoon at Kayo Field.
Nicole McKee (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur),
Marissa Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) and
Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) each registered four point, while McKee led the game with four goals.
The Chargers improve to 12-1 overall and 8-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the victory. The Greyhounds fall to 8-7 overall and 6-6 in conference action after the loss.
McKee added three ground balls, a draw control and two caused turnovers to her stat line. Campbell scored three and handed out one assist to go along with five ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers. Fisher tallied two goals with two assists, while adding two ground balls and a draw control.
Courtney Ackland (Perth, Western Australia/Churchlands) and
Brittany Ast (Glenwood, N.J./Vernon Township) both recorded a goal and an assist.
Corinne Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial),
Ashley Travis (LaFayette, N.Y./LaFayette ) and Caitlin O'Brien added one goal apiece, while
Nicole Belanger (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and
Maya Szymanski (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) rounded out scoring with one assist each.
In the net,
Alyssa Gianotti (Monkton, Md./Hereford) recorded two saves in her 11th win of the season.
Marissa McDermott (Longmeadow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy) entered the net at halftime and posted three saves in the final 30 minutes.
UNH held a 32-12 advantage in shots and 25-15 in ground balls, but trailed 11-9 in draw controls. The Chargers went perfect on clear attempts, taking the ball from the defensive to offensive zones on 12-of-12 attempts. Assumption also record five more saves than New Haven (10-5).
New Haven scored the game's first six goals during the opening 24 minutes of the first half. Campbell netted her 33rd and 34th goals of the season in the first 10 minutes. Marissa Fisher and McKee exchanged scores twice over the next 16 minutes to put the Chargers ahead 6-0 with 6:44 left in the first stanza. Assumption won the draw controls and scored three of the final four goals of the first half to cut New Haven's halftime lead to 7-3 as the whistle blew.
UNH took control in the first 10 minutes of the second half, scoring four unanswered goals to take an 11-3 lead after an Ackland goal at the 20:18 mark. McKee scored off a free position shot at 16:15, while Travis netted her second of the year at the 13:30 mark to put the Chargers ahead by 10 goals, 13-3. Freshman O'Brien scored the Chargers final goal of the game with 7:05 left. The Greyhounds added one more with just over four minutes left to bring the UNH lead to 14-4. Marisa Troisi caused a turnover after Assumption won the ensuing draw to give the Chargers the ball and ability to run out the clock. The Greyhounds did regain possession in the final seconds, but a shot was turned away by McDermott in the closing seconds.
No. 4 New Haven returns to action on Saturday, April 19 when it hosts Southern New Hampshire in another NE-10 matchup. The game will be senior day for the Chargers and will start at 1 p.m.
