BOX SCORE COLCHESTER, Vt. - The nationally ranked No. 4 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team set a regular season wins record with a 15-12 Northeast-10 Conference victory at Saint Michael's College Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Chargers improve 15-2 overall and 11-1 in conference play surpassing the previous record of 14 regular season wins in 2008. The mark is also just one victory shy of tying the 2009 record of 16 total wins in a season.
With the loss, the Purple Knights conclude their season at 6-8 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) and
Courtney Ackland (Perth, Western Australia/Churchlands) both finished with six points, while
Nicole McKee (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) chipped in with five tallies. Campbell scored four goals with two assists, four draw controls and one ground ball. Ackland scored three and handed out three assists to go along with two draw controls. McKee netted four, while recording an assist, three draw controls, a ground ball and a caused turnover.
Nicole Belanger (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and
Marissa Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) each added multiple points in the win as well.
Maya Szymanski (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) chipped in with a goal as well.
In goal for UNH,
Marissa McDermott (Longmeadow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy) recorded the win, playing the entire second half and stopping one shot.
Alyssa Gianotti (Monkton, Md./Hereford) started the game, played the entire first half and recorded two saves.
The Chargers suffered winning the draw as the Purple Knights took 16 of the 29 draws. New Haven held a 20-13 advantage in ground balls and a 26-23 lead in shots. Both teams turned the ball over 15 or more times, while UNH went 12-for-15 in clear attempts and Saint Michael's 10-of-14.
Caught off guard in the first 10 minutes, the Chargers found themselves in a 3-0 hole after 8:30 of the first half. Campbell broke the run with an unassisted goal at the 20:22 mark, while a free position shot from Shannon Murphy gave the Purple Knights a 4-1 advantage just 25 seconds later. Campbell buried her 47th of the season with 19:20 left in the first half and sparked a 10-0 by the Chargers over the next 17:16. During the run, McKee scored three while Campbell and Ackland both netted a pair. Ackland assisted on three during the stretch as well. Belanger scored her first of two in the game at the 2:04 mark, giving the Chargers an 11-4 lead. The momentum then swung in favor of Saint Michael's as it put in two goals in the final minute of the first half to cut the UNH lead to five, 11-6, at halftime.
The Purple Knight carried the momentum into the second half as well, scoring the first four goals of the stanza and bringing the score within one, 11-10, with 11:04 left. After winning back-to-back draw controls, Ackland and Belanger gave the Chargers a 13-10 lead three minutes later. Campbell and McKee added two more at the 6:03 and 5:36 marks to conclude the 4-0 run by the Chargers who took a 15-10 lead. The Purple Knights were not finished, scoring the game's final two goals at the 2:41 and 1:31 mark to bring the final score within three, 15-12.
The nationally ranked Chargers have clinched the No. 2 seed in next week's Northeast-10 Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship and a first round bye. They will travel to top-seed Adelphi University on Saturday, May 3 for the semifinal round against an opponent to be determined after the opening round on Wednesday, April 30.
