BOX SCORE GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - A 4-0 run late in the second half propelled the No. 4 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team past No. 12 Saint Anselm, 15-14, in a Northeast-10 Championship Semifinal contest on Saturday afternoon at Adelphi's Motamed Field. The Chargers will meet the host and No. 1 nationally-ranked Panthers in tomorrow's NE-10 Championship Game at 3 p.m.
With the win, second-seeded New Haven improves to 16-2 on the season. The third-seeded Hawks fall to 13-4. The Chargers claimed the regular-season meeting in an equally thrilling fashion by a score of 12-10 on Kayo Field on April 5.
Northeast-10 Midfielder of the Year
Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) scored four goals with two assists, breaking the New Haven program records with 98 points this season.
Marissa Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) netted her three goals consecutively in a span of 5:15 in the second half as the Chargers surged into the lead for good at 14-13.
Courtney Ackland (Perth, Western Australia/Churchlands),
Nicole McKee (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur),
Corinne Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) and
Maya Szymanski (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) scored two goals apiece.
McKee and Campbell contributed in the transition game with six and five draw controls, respectively.
Nicole Belanger (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) picked up a team-leading three groundballs.
Marissa McDermott (Longmeadow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy) went the distance in goal and made five saves.
Kelly Pickett had a game-high five goals for the Hawks. Kelly Doherty added four goals and six draw controls. The Chargers held First Team All-Northeast-10 selection Marissa Daly scoreless on only two shots.
Jane Bunn made seven saves between the posts for Saint Anselm.
Pickett tallied the game's first two goals for the Hawks, before Campbell and Fisher responded in a span of 27 seconds to knot the contest at 2-2. After Doherty's first marker for Saint Anselm, the Chargers went on a 3-0 run with goals from McKee, Szymanski and Ackland as the Blue and Gold took their first lead of the afternoon at 5-3.
Each club added two goals mover the ensuing 2:20 before the Hawks ran off three in a row to climb back into the lead at 8-7. Szymanski's second tally of the half knotted the contest at 8-8, and Saint Anselm struck in the final minute to head into the locker room with a 9-8 edge.
The Hawks scored the first goal of the second half to reopen a two-goal lead before Campbell and Corinne Fisher went back-to-back to force a 10-10 deadlock. The two clubs traded markers again before the Hawks ripped off two scores to take a 13-11 advantage with 20:33 to play.
At that point, Marissa Fisher accounted for the next three goals, with the final tally of the hat trick staking New Haven to a 14-13 advantage with 14:41 left. Campbell added an insurance marker with 13:53 to go, and the Chargers' defense clamped down and dominated possession. After gaining control of the ball with 6:26 left, the Blue and Gold kept possession in their offensive half until just 32 seconds remained. Saint Anselm added a goal at the horn to round out the 15-14 final score.
The Chargers will return to Motamed Field tomorrow to meet the host Adelphi Panthers for the 2014 Northeast-10 Championship at 3 p.m.
