BOX SCORE LAKELAND, Fla. – The University of New Haven women's volleyball team was swept by Lewis University in the Chargers' second match of the afternoon at the FSC/Terrace Hotel Classic. The Blue and Gold were led by eight kills from
Margo Meteyer (Madison, Wis./Madison West) and 16 digs by libero
Kea-Marie Olaso (Kailua, Hawai'i/Le Jardin Academy).

After falling to Flagler in five sets earlier today, New Haven stands at 0-2. Today's encounter was the first match of the fall for Lewis, which challenges host Florida Southern later this evening. The Flyers took the match by set scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-8.

In addition to Meteyer's eight kills,
Meghan Kennelly (Detroit, Mich./Eisenhower) added five finishers, and
Kristy Atufunwa (Denver, Colo./Denver East) sent down four kills.
Hayley Wilson (Denver, Colo./Overland) posted three kills and
Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) notched one.
Kaulana Ane (Paia, Hawai'i/Kamehameha) ran the offense from the setter position and distributed 19 assists.

Defensively, Meteyer added seven digs and had a hand in two blocks.
Annika Hacker (Bayreuth, Germany/Littleton (Colo.)) chipped in with eight digs, and Ane picked up six from the back row. Olaso and Kennelly each dropped in service ace.

Lewis – the GLVC regular season champion and an NCAA Division II Midwest Region Championship qualifier in 2013 – was led by 10 kills from Kim Vertin. Leigh Barea doled out 33 assists, and Amy Choi posted a match-high 17 digs.

New Haven started the scoring in set one on a block by Meteyer and Atufunwa followed by an Olaso ace. However, Lewis began to piece together two- and three-point spurts to build a 16-10 advantage. The margin grew as large as eight points, allowing the Flyers to withstand a late four-point run by the Chargers en route to a 25-20 win.

Lewis carried its momentum into the second set, posting the first six points of the stanza. The Chargers shortened the margin to three points on several occasions but drew no closer as the Flyers to set two by a 25-16 count.

Another quick start for Lewis was the story in set three. The Flyers went on the set's first run with a 10-point burst to construct a sizeable 16-4 lead. Another 6-0 run sealed the match with the Chargers falling, 25-8, to round out the 3-0 final score.

The Chargers wrap up action in the Sunshine State tomorrow with two more contests at the FSC/Terrace Hotel Classic. New Haven challenges host Florida Southern at 12:30 p.m. and meets Nova Southeastern at 5 p.m. The Blue and Gold return home to open their East Region and Northeast-10 Conference slate on Saturday, Sept. 13 against Franklin Pierce. Queens will also visit Charger Gymnasium next Saturday as a part of a tri-match with the Chargers and Ravens.
