MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of New Haven baseball team rallied from a two-run seventh inning deficit, but the Concordia Clippers tallied three runs in the eighth to upend the Chargers 6-3 in the season opener for both teams.
Scoreless into the fourth, the Clippers posted the first run of the game in the top of the inning before New Haven responded. Leading off the inning,
Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)) singled. Two batters later,
Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic)doubled him home, knotting the game at 1-1.
After Concordia scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, the Chargers responded in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Zagaja walked.
Nick Perrelli (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) followed with a triple, plating Zagaja, slicing the lead to a run.
Eddie Tammaro (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) stood in next and singled home Perrelli, tying the contest at 3-3. The Clippers had the final say, however, scoring three times in the eighth to put the game away.
Vincent Aprea (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) started for New Haven, surrendering three runs on five hits, striking out a career-high seven.
Offensively, Zagaja went 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI and two walks.
The Chargers continue their day with an evening game against Chestnut Hill.
