MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of New Haven baseball team jumped out to an early lead, but fell to the Chestnut Hill Griffins 10-2 in the late game on Friday night.
The Chargers scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning as with one out,
Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)) reached on a fielder's choice. After a
Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) single put two runners on, they advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. A walk to
Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) loaded the bases before a balk forced Caico home for a 1-0 lead. The Griffins responded right away, scoring five runs in the bottom of the frame and tacking on three more total in the fourth and fifth.
New Haven got one of the runs back in the sixth as Zagaja walked to open the inning, followed by a single from
PJ Contreras (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge). After a fielder's choice put runners on the corners, a ground ball by
Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) scored Zagaja.
Offensively in the nightcap, both Petrillo and Contreras had two hits.
The Chargers return to action on Saturday when they will face Wilmington at 4:00 p.m. in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
