No. 20 Lacrosse Extends Win Streak, Takes 9-8 Battle Over Bentley

BOX SCORE

WALTHAM, Mass. – Just hours after being named the IWLCA National Player of the Week, junior midfielder Mackenzie Reh (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) continued her multi-goal game trend with a team-high four goals to lead the No. 20 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team to a 9-8 road victory against the Bentley Falcons. With the victory, the Chargers improve to 11-5 overall and 8-4 in the Northeast-10 with one more game on the docket in the regular season.

Reh's four goals was part of five total Chargers who found the back of the net under the lights at Bentley Field. Her four goals is also the seventh straight game she has finished with at least a hat trick of scores, increasing her team lead to 62 goals. Joining her with a multi-game outing was sophomore Kendra Nolan (Oak Ridge, N.J. /Jefferson Township ) who chipped in a pair of goals while Julia Jette (Franklin, Mass./Franklin), Caroline Maher (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) and Samantha Galler (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) each added one goal apiece. Maher also added a team-high three assists, matching Reh with four points, while Jessica Mazliah (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) added two helpers.

Sophomore Gianna Guerra (Thiells, N.Y./North Rockland) played the full 60 minutes for the fourth-straight game, stopping 15 of the Falcons scoring attempts, her seventh game with double figure saves. Overall, Guerra faced 40 shots from Bentley who played just 23 of them on goal.

Bentley scored the first two goals of the game before allowing New Haven on the board. The first goal of the night came as the Falcons took care of an early penalty assessed to the Chargers, converting on the man-up opportunity. Following that early 2-0 deficit, the Chargers rattled off three straight to take their first lead of the night with 13:25 remaining before the break.

Two of those first three goals came from Reh as she opened the Chargers scoring with an unassisted tally just over five minutes into the action and just 40 seconds after the Falcons second goal of the night. Her go-ahead goal came nearly 10 minutes later, again scoring without any assistance provided. Sandwiched between the two Reh goals was the first of the night for Nolan as she used a feed from Mazliah for her first tally. Overall during that three-goal run, the Chargers held Bentley scoreless for more than 12 minutes.

After allowing a game-tying goal from Bentley's Paige O'Neil, the Chargers matched their earlier run with another three-goal rally, this time extending their lead out to 6-3 with, with that lead coming nearly eight minutes into the second period. The first two goals in that stretch came before the intermission with Jette and Reh providing a 5-3 lead for the Blue and Goal at the break. Jette's goal came with some help from Maher who also provided the assist on the third goal in the rally which allowed Nolan to score her second of the night.

Bentley answered that three goal deficit with back-to-back scores to pull within one before the Chargers took both of those goals back and regained a three-goal advantage with just under 15 minutes remaining. Reh was the first to score in that stretch, breaking the Falcons momentum, before Maher got on the board two minutes later thanks to a pass from Mazliah.

Bentley again rallied to pull within a single goal, but New Haven responded as Samantha Galler (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) broke a more than five minute drought for both teams with her one, and only, goal on the night courtesy of a pass from Maher. Bentley looked to rally in the final minutes, but could only muster one more goal which came with 12 seconds remaining, another man-up opportunity.

New Haven will close out the regular season on Saturday at Kathy Zolad Stadium when they host the Saint Anselm Hawks for Senior Day. Prior to the opening draw, the Chargers will honor their two seniors; Jessica Mazliah (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) and Courtney Duffy (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack). That ceremony will be followed by a 1:00 p.m. first draw.
