WEST HAVEN, Conn. – New Haven field hockey is set for a rivalry showdown this Wednesday afternoon against Southern Connecticut State at 4 p.m.
INSIDE THE SERIES
New Haven is 1-0 all-time against Southern, winning its only matchup against the Owls last season on Oct. 9, 2018. New Haven emerged victorious in the first matchup last season 2-1 for their first-ever win in Northeast-10 play.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (3-6, 3-3 NE10)
The Chargers have dropped their last two games, both against nationally-ranked opponents. The Chargers have not lost a game this year in which they have scored, winning three games in NE10 play, and suffering six shutout losses thus far in 2019.
In their third season as a varsity program, the Chargers have already taken significant strides forward. After jumping out to their best start in NE10 play in program history, the Chargers have also set a new program record for goals in a game with their 4-2 win over Molloy on Sept. 18.
Junior goaltender
Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) tied a career-high with 22 saves on Wednesday at No. 9 Adelphi, ranking her third in the NE10 this season in saves with 77.
Sophomore
Julia Battino (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) scored her third goal of the season on Sept. 21 at American International, moving into the team lead in that category. Sophomore
Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) registered a two-goal night against Molloy. Sophomore
Taylor Geaglone (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) boasts a team-leading two assists, while freshman
Zharria John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) has the team's other assist.
SCOUTING THE OWLS (0-7, 0-4 NE10)
Southern has dropped each of the first seven games of 2019, most recently a 6-0 defeat to No. 10 Assumption on Saturday. The Owls are averaging 0.71 goals per game this season and are allowing just under five goals per contest (4.71).
Goaltender Brianna Craft holds an .800 save percentage, making a NE10 leading 96 saves through seven games. She is coming off a school record 29-save performance against Assumption on Saturday.
Five different Owls have combined to score one goal each this season, including Karley Welles, who leads the team with 10 shots (seven on goal).
