THE LEAD
Having wrapped up its non-conference schedule against Mercy on Saturday, the New Haven volleyball team returns to NE10 action on Tuesday night hosting the Pace Setters at Charger Gymnasium.
SERIES HISTORY VS PACE
In one of its longest all-time series, the New Haven volleyball team owns a 46-7 record against Pace in a series that dates back to 1986. The Chargers opened up with a sequence of 14-straight wins against the Setters with Pace not earning its first victory until September 26, 1995. In most recent history, the Blue and Gold have won three straight against Pace, and 19 of the previous 21 match-ups all together. The two Charger losses in the middle of that stretch came in back-to-back seasons in 2015 and 2016.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
After splitting its tri-match this past weekend, New Haven looks to return to the win column in NE10 play when it hosts the Setters. Leading the Chargers is junior
Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) with 148 kills including a high for all players this season with 21 against Mercy. She is joined in triple digits by sophomore
Ruby Fera (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) (143 kills), senior
Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) (141 kills) and junior
Camille Garden (Atlanta, Ga./Landmark Christian) (113 kills). Of the leading hitters Garden leads the way with a .238 attack percentage while she also adds a team-high 48 blocks, third most in the NE10. The Chargers utilize a 6-2 rotation at the setter position with junior
Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) (375 assists) and freshman
Sammie Paguia (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) (178 assists) splitting the workload. Defensively, New Haven has relied on rookie libero
Julia Guarniere (Milford, N.H./Milford) to do the majority of the work, racking up 285 digs, while Nowicki follows Garden in the blocking efforts with 29 total returns.
SCOUTING THE SETTERS
Pace enters Tuesday night looking to snap an eight-match skid and win just their second match of the season with its only win of the year coming in four sets over Mercy College. For the season, Pace is led by sophomore outside hitter Sandra Yang who is the only Setter to register triple digits offensively, racking up 128 kills for an average of 2.37 per set. Pace utilizes a pair of setters with senior Samantha Nidini (168 assists) and sophomore Katy Motz (116 assists) splitting the action. Defensively, senior Danielle Vaiano leads the way with 202 digs while junior Mackenzie Byrne leads the team with 35 total blocks.
