WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Chargers will face Saint Thomas Aquinas for the first time in field hockey on Wednesday evening at Ralph DellaCamera Stadium. The game has been pushed back to a 7 p.m. start.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The two teams have not met before in the sport of field hockey. Saint Thomas Aquinas is in its first season as an associate member of the Northeast-10.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (5-8, 5-4 NE10)
The Chargers will look to stay above .500 in conference play, coming off a hard fought 2-1 double overtime win at Saint Michael's on Saturday. The Chargers currently sit in sixth place in the NE10 standings, with the top eight teams qualifying for the NE10 Tournament. Prior to the Saint Michael's game, New Haven had played four of its previous five games against nationally ranked opponents. On Oct. 2, New Haven pulled out a 1-0 victory at Southern Connecticut State behind the first career goal for freshman
Anna Racine (Whiteford, Md./North Hartford). The Chargers have not lost a game this year in which they have scored, winning five games in NE10 play, and suffering eight shutout losses thus far in 2019.
In their third season as a varsity program, the Chargers won one game in conference play in 2018 and have already rattled off five this season. The team's 1-0 blanking of Southern Connecticut was also the first shutout win in program history.
Junior goaltender
Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) tied a career-high with 22 saves on Sept. 25 at No. 9 Adelphi, ranking her second in the NE10 this season in saves with 119.
Sophomore
Julia Battino (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season on a penalty stroke in double overtime at Saint Michael's on Saturday. Sophomore
Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) registered a two-goal night against Molloy. Sophomore
Taylor Geaglone (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) boasts a team-leading two assists, while freshman
Zharria John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) has the team's other assist.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS (5-7, 3-5 NE10)
STAC is coming off the short end of a 2-1 overtime loss over the weekend at Southern New Hampshire over the weekend and just like the Chargers, are 2-2 over their last four games. The Spartans are scoring an even 2.0 goals per game, while allowing 2.65 per game.
Senior Briannah Thorne has seven goal this season to lead the team, with Lisa Larsson following with six goals and two assists. Lotte Strijbos adds four goals and two assists, and Laura Cooper and Jade Hall have three goals apiece.
Suzanne Clarke has seen action in 12 games in goal for the Spartans, holding a 4-7 record with a 2.44 GAA.
