MANSFIELD, Mass. – The University of New Haven women's basketball team has been selected to finish third in the Northeast-10 Southwest Division Preseason Coaches' Poll, the league announced on Thursday.
New Haven picked up 62 points in the poll, which was voted upon by the league's head coaches. Reigning NE10 Tournament champion Le Moyne led the way in the Southwest Division with 90 points and 12 of the 14 first-place votes. Next up was Adelphi with 69 points and one first place tally, followed by New Haven. Southern Connecticut (57) finished fourth with one first-place tally. American Int'l (47), Pace (34) and Saint Rose (26) rounded out the Southwest Division.
In the Northeast Division, defending NCAA Regional champion Saint Anselm claimed the top spot with 83 points and eight first-place votes. Bentley and Stonehill tied for second with 77 points apiece, with Bentley claiming five first-place votes to Stonehill's one. Southern New Hampshire (50), Assumption (41), Saint Michael's (29) and Franklin Pierce (28) rounded out the bottom four.
The Chargers are coming off an 18-12 (10-10 NE10) season in 2018-19 that saw them advance to the semifinals in the Northeast-10 Championship Tournament. The team returns four players who started in at least 17 games last season including senior forward
Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany), sophomore guard
Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community), junior guard
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington), and senior guard
Kim Talley (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic). Wormack leads all returners with 12.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game last season, and NE10 All-Rookie team honoree DeBose registered 9.2 ppg and 4.3 rpg during her freshman season.
New Haven will open up the 2019-20 campaign with four straight home games starting on Nov. 9 against the College of Staten Island.
