WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The New Haven field hockey team will welcome ninth ranked Southern New Hampshire to DellaCamera Stadium this Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup. The game will mark the fifth ranked opponent that Chargers will play in 2019. Prior to the game, New Haven will honor
Ashley Higgins (North Hatfield, Mass./Smith Academy), the team's lone senior in the Class of 2019.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Penmen have won each of the first two matchups all-time against the Chargers over the last two seasons.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (5-9, 5-5 NE10)
The Chargers are coming off back-to-back overtime games, most recently falling 2-1 in overtime on a rainy Wednesday night at home against Saint Thomas Aquinas. New Haven previously pulled out a hard-fought 2-1 road win in double overtime at Saint Michael's on Saturday. The Chargers currently sit in seventh place in the NE10 standings, with the top eight teams qualifying for the NE10 Tournament. Wednesday night's setback was the first time the Chargers lost this year when scoring a goal.
In their third season as a varsity program, the Chargers won one game in conference play in 2018 and have already rattled off five this season. The team's 1-0 blanking of Southern Connecticut was also the first shutout win in program history.
Junior goaltender
Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) tied a career-high with 22 saves on Sept. 25 at No. 9 Adelphi, and currently ranks second in the NE10 this season in saves with 125.
Sophomore
Julia Battino (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season on a penalty stroke in double overtime at Saint Michael's on Saturday. Sophomore
Taylor Geaglone (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) scored her first goal of the year with just over four minutes remaining in regulation against STAC, and has a team-leading two assists. Freshmen
Zharria John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) and
Katie Durkee (Salem, Conn./East Lyme) each have an assist.
SCOUTING THE PENMEN (10-3, 7-2 NE10)
Winners of four straight games, Southern New Hampshire finds itself ranked No. 9 in the NFHCA Division II Coaches' Poll for the third straight week. SNHU's three losses have all come against ranked opponents, and have also grabbed a win over then-No. 7 Stonehill.
Senior Laura van der Doorn is tied for the conference lead with 11 goals this season, and freshman Lisa Hagel is tied for third with nine. Junior Helene Servias (7) and sophomore Emily Campbell (6) rank among the top three in the NE10 in assists.
Graduate student Melanie Rennie has started all 13 games this season, is tied for fourth in the NE10 with just 12 goals allowed, and is fourth with a 1.04 goals-against average.
ON DECK
The Blue and Gold will begin a two-game road stretch this Wednesday with a trip to Stonehill at 3 p.m.
