WEST HAVEN, Conn. – With a chance to clinch a spot in the upcoming Northeast-10 Championship Tournament, New Haven field hockey will host Bentley in its regular season finale on Friday night at 7 p.m. at DellaCamera Stadium. Currently one game out of the eighth and final postseason spot, a win would clinch the Chargers' first-ever trip to the NE10 Tournament.
INSIDE THE SERIES
New Haven is seeking its first-ever win against the Falcons. This will be Bentley's first-ever trip to DellaCamera Stadium.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (5-12, 5-8 NE10)
Holding a school record five wins on the season, the Chargers have dropped their last four games in a row, including a 2-1 overtime defeat to Saint Thomas Aquinas and a 2-0 loss to No. 9 Southern New Hampshire, both at home. New Haven previously pulled out a hard-fought 2-1 road win in double overtime at Saint Michael's on Oct 12.
In their third season as a varsity program, the Chargers won one game in conference play in 2018 and have rattled off five this season. The team's 1-0 blanking of Southern Connecticut was also the first shutout win in program history. The team is 5-2 this year in games where they have scored goal.
Junior goaltender
Natalie Shaker (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) tied a career-high with 22 saves on Sept. 25 at No. 9 Adelphi, and added a 17-save effort at Stonehill last Wednesday. She currently ranks second in the NE10 this season with 159 saves.
Sophomore
Taylor Geaglone (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) scored her second goal of the season at Stonehill last Wednesday, and leads the team with three assists. Sophomore
Julia Battino (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season on a penalty stroke in double overtime at Saint Michael's on Oct. 12. Freshmen
Zharria John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) and
Katie Durkee (Salem, Conn./East Lyme) each have one assist.
SCOUTING THE FALCONS (8-9, 6-7 NE10)
Currently clinging to the eighth and final postseason spot in the NE10 standings, Bentley sits one game ahead of both New Haven and American International with one game remaining. The Falcons would clinch a NE10 postseason berth with a win, AND a loss from AIC.
Bentley has won four of its last five games, including a 5-1 win over Mercy on Tuesday. A much better team on the road this season, Bentley is 6-2 away from Waltham compared to 2-7 on their home field.
Leading the way are a pair of double-digit goal scorers in seniors Rachel Crowley and Tess Anderson. Crowley is tied for the NE10 lead with 13 goals, and Anderson is tied for eighth with 10. Anderson is also tied for third in the conference with seven assists. Sophomore goaltender Kayleigh Vogel has appeared in 16 games this season, holding a 7-7 record with a .701 save percentage and a 2.37 GAA.
ON DECK
While a loss on Friday would end the Chargers' season, a win would guarantee New Haven a spot in the NE10 Quarterfinals on Tuesday, Nov. 5, where they would take on Saint Anselm, who has clinched the No. 1 seed.
