THE LEAD
The New Haven volleyball team puts its four match win streak and its unbeaten record at home (4-0) on the line Wednesday night when it welcomes fellow Connecticut shoreline foe Bridgeport to Charger Gymnasium. Bridgeport will travel to West Haven following back-to-back three set sweeps of NE10 members Franklin Pierce on Saturday and Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday night.
SERIES HISTORY VS BRIDGEPORT
New Haven and Bridgeport meet for the 47th time in the history of the program with the series dating back to the 1976 campaign. Overall, New Haven holds a 38-8 advantage in the previous 46 meetings, including back-to-back sweeps in 2017 and 2018. Prior to those two victories, Bridgeport had won two straight against New Haven while those two wins broke a six-match win streak for the Blue and Gold.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
New Haven rides a four-match win streak into its regional meeting with Bridgeport and will return to the court for the first time since a sweep of Caldwell last Thursday. Leading the Chargers is sophomore
Ruby Fera (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) with 118 kills while she is joined in triple digits by junior
Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) (113 kills) and senior
Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) (105 kills). Of the three leading hitters Nowicki leads the way with a .214 attack percentage. Also joining in the offensive threat is junior
Camille Garden (Atlanta, Ga./Landmark Christian) who adds 84 kills while she leads the team with 36 blocks on the year, seventh most in the NE10. The Chargers utilize a 6-2 rotation at the setter position with junior
Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) (03 assists) and freshman
Sammie Paguia (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) (120 assists) splitting the workload. Defensively, New Haven has relied on rookie libero
Julia Guarniere (Milford, N.H./Milford) to do the majority of the work, racking up 218 digs, while Nowicki follows Garden in the blocking efforts with 23 total returns.
SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS
The Purple Knights opened up the 2019 campaign winners of their first seven matches and 11 of their first 12 competitions on the season. Most recently, Bridgeport knocked off a pair of Northeast-10 opponents this week with sweeps of Franklin Pierce on Saturday afternoon and Southern Connecticut less than 24 hours ago. Leading the Purple Knights on the season is senior outside hitter Amanda Hennemann whose 203 kills is second most in the East Coast Conference. Sophomore middle Amanda Keller is currently third on the team with 149 kills while leading the team and the ECC with a .389 attack percentage. Also among the league leaders is a pair of Purple Knights who hold the top two spots in service points with sophomore Breanna Jones and junior Klein Johnson, both of whom are defensive specialists, have 39 and 38 aces, respectively. Johnson is also second in the conference while leading the Knights with 263 digs.
