SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
While most teams have played a handful of games this season, New Haven has just two games under its belt prior to tonight's match-up with the undefeated Setters. Through its first two games, the Chargers are averaging 79 points per game, 14 ppg more than their opponents. The one area of improvement for New Haven comes on the glass where they are currently being outrebounded by 11 boards per contest. The Chargers are dishing out the rock at a rather high rate, 17.0 assists-per-game, led by sophomore point guard
Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) who has 11 total on the year. Leading New Haven's offense in the early going has been senior
Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) and redshirt junior
Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) who are averaging 13.5 and 13.0 points per game, respectively. Bailed led the Chargers last time out with the Blue and Gold's first 20 points game of the season against Le Moyne.
SCOUTING THE SETTERS
Pace has made an early statement among the east region ... don't underestimate the Setters in 2019-20. With 97 and 99 point outputs among their season-opening 5-0 start, the Setters are outscoring their opponents by 22.2 points per game, shooting at an impressive 46.4 percent as a team. As a team, Pace is also outrebounding its opponents by 6.2 rebounds per game, is averaging 17.4 assists per game and are committing 7.4 less turnovers than their opposition. Individually, senior forward Peyton Wejnert is the player to key on, currently leading Pace with an average of 24.0 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game. THREE POINT THREAT
With the return of the top two three point shooters from a season ago, New Haven is poised to build on the momentum of a school record 267 three point field goals last season. It was the second straight year the Chargers hit a school record from long range as they did so with 239 during the 2017-18 campaign. Leading New Haven into the new season will be
Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) (68) and
Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) (66) who combined for half of the total three pointers from last season. The biggest loss from outside the arc comes in the form of
Roy Kane, Jr. (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) who finished with 46 three pointers. Through the first two games, the Chargers have converted 22 three pointers, if they were to maintain their current average for the remainder of the regular season the Chargers would stand at 286 three pointers made.
EARNING RESPECT
Last season's late run that ended in the NCAA Division II East Regional semifinals has put the Chargers on the national radar in 2019-20 as they opened the year receiving votes in both the NABC and D2SIDA national polls. In the coaches' poll, the Chargers received 17 votes and were one of three NE10 teams represented. In the media poll, New Haven scored 21 votes, falling three spots shy of reaching the top-25.
