MANSFIELD, Mass. – Senior
Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) and freshman
Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) helped New Haven sweep the Northeast-10 Conference weekly awards on Monday, as the pair were recognized as the conference's Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively. The two forwards played vital roles in helping New Haven to a pair of road wins at American International and Chestnut Hill.
At 8-1 overall, the Chargers have won eight of their first nine games for just the third time in program history, and are off to their best start since the 1988-89 season.
Wormack scored a season-high 27 points in a win at American International on Tuesday, then 24 hours later, registered a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds while hitting the game-winning jumper with 1.4 seconds left in a dramatic 66-64 win at Chestnut Hill. Wormack shot 70.4 percent (19-for-27) on the week while averaging 21.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game to go with five steals, three assists and two blocks.
Wormack's 27 points at AIC was a season-high and three shy of her career-high. She went 12-for-14 from the floor with six rebounds to lead New Haven to a big NE10 win.
On Wednesday at Chestnut Hill, she proved crucial once more with her double-double, four steals and three assists. She capped off the night by nailing the game-winning shot with just over one second remaining, putting up a short jumper from just outside the paint directly off an inbounds pass. She also had a pair of layups earlier in the fourth quarter as part of a 7-0 run to help the Chargers build a 61-57 lead.
Deshaies averaged 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while shooting 75.0 percent (12-for-16) during New Haven's 2-0 week, including her second-career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds on 7-of-9 from the field at Chestnut Hill on Wednesday.
In Tuesday's conference win at AIC, she reached double-figures with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting. At Chestnut Hill, she scored six straight points as part of a 16-3 Charger run in the first quarter to help build an early 19-10 lead. For the season, Deshiaes is shooting 60.3 percent from the floor while scoring 11.7 points per game, second most on the team.
The Chargers will return to action on Thursday with a non-conference matchup at Dominican at 7 p.m.
