WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Battle for the Elm City will be renewed this Wednesday night at Charger Gymnasium, as New Haven will host Southern Connecticut State at 5:30 p.m.
The game will serve as the Chargers' annual Alzheimer's Awareness Game. The team will be wearing their Walk to End Alzheimer's shirts and encourage everyone in attendance to wear purple to show their support.
INSIDE THE SERIES
- The Chargers hold a 44-30 lead in the all-time series against the Owls and have won two straight.
SCOUTING NEW HAVEN
- New Haven started the season strong with four straight wins at home before falling in their most recent matchup, 55-45 last Tuesday at Pace, their first and only road game thus far in 2019.
- The Chargers defense has been a dominating force behind the team's early-season success, holding their opponents to under 50 points on three occasions, and in each of their last three games, while limiting their opponents to a league-low 50.0 ppg and a field goal percentage of .319, also the lowest in the NE10.
- Freshman
Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) has scored double figures in four games this season, leading the NE10 with a .650 field goal pct.
- Senior
Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) leads the team in both ppg (12.8) and rpg (8.4). She had a season-high 14-rebound, five-block performance on Saturday Nov. 23 against Le Moyne. She has 12+ rebounds on two occasions this season.
- Sophomore
Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) has scored double figures in three games with 7.6 ppg and is third with 4.8 rebounds per contest.
-
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) is third on the team in scoring (8.6 ppg) and ranks second with a career-best 5.4 rebounds per game. She is also tied for 10th in the NE10 with 3.8 assists per game.
- Redshirt sophomore point guard
Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla./New Hampton) tied her career-high with six assists against Pace, matching her career-high mark from last season at UPR-Bayamon. She ranks 7th in the NE10 with 4.2 assists per game.
A key component to the team's defense against Le Moyne, she finished with a season-high four steals and dished out five assists.
- The Chargers were selected to finish third in the Southwest Division in this year's Northeast-10 Preseason Coach's Poll. New Haven returns four players that started in at least 17 games last season.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN CONN. ST.
- The Owls enter the week with a 4-2 overall record, dropping their conference opener to American Int'l 65-57 last Tuesday.
- Kiana Steinauer leads the Owls in both scoring (17.3 ppg) and rebounding (12.5 rpg) this season, but has missed the last two games.
- Forward Jessica Fressle is second on the team in scoring and rebounding, while senior guard Imani Wheeler is also scoring in double figures with 14.7 ppg.
- As a team, the Owls are scoring 68.3 ppg this season, good for sixth in the NE10.
- SCSU is shooting 33.1 percent from beyond the arc, having attempted the third-most three-pointers in the conference (133).
- SCSU is fifth in scoring defense while allowing 57.0 ppg and is holding opponents to 35.8 percent shooting from the field.
- Individually, Blake Greer is second in the NE10 by shooting 58.3 percent from three-point range.
- Steinauer is fourth in the NE10 in scoring, second in rebounding, and third in shooting (63.0 field goal percentage).
LAST TIME THEY MET
Back on Feb. 6, the Chargers took down SCSU 61-48 at Charger Gymnasium.
The Chargers dominated 32-10 in the paint and finished 20-for-43 from the field (46.5 percent). Defensively, New Haven held the Owls to 26.8 percent from the field and 9-for-38 from three-point range, including holding Southern to just one made three-pointer over their last 18 attempts from beyond the arc.
Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) scored 18 points and tied for a team-high eight rebounds on 7-for-11 shooting.
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) added 10 points and three assists.
Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) scored seven points to go with eight rebounds and a team-high four steals, and
Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla./New Hampton) played a gritty game with six points and a team-high four assists, while drawing six fouls on defense.
LAST TIME OUT
A slow start proved to be too much for New Haven to overcome as the Chargers suffered their first loss of the season at Pace on Tuesday, 55-45.
Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) led New Haven with 18 points on 9-of-15 shooting to go with three steals and two blocks. She recorded her 100th career block in the game, becoming just the fourth player in school history to reach the milestone.
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) scored nine points, and redshirt sophomore
Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla./New Hampton) dished out six assists.
A strong defensive effort in the second half helped the Chargers (44.7 percent) outshoot Pace (41.3 percent) in the game, and the Chargers turned the ball over a season-low 16 times while forcing 18 Pace turnovers. After Pace shot over 63 percent in the opening half, New Haven held the Setters to just 5-for-24 from the field in the second half.
UNDER-50 CLUB
New Haven held opponents - Bridgeport (42), Bloomfield (47) and Le Moyne (49) - to under-50 points in three straight games for the first time since January 2017.
RICHARD'S RECORD
Sydney Richard (Hooksett, N.H./Bradford Christian Academy) recorded a career-high four rebounds at Pace on Nov. 26, doubling her previous career-high mark which she had achieved four times. She also recorded her first career block in the game.
BLOCK PARTY
Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) swatted away five shots on Nov. 23 against Le Moyne, the most rejections in one game by a Charger since Wormack herself had a career-high seven blocks on Dec. 12, 2016 at Goldey-Beacom.
CRASHING THE BOARDS
New Haven has yet to be outrebounded this season, outrebounding its opponents in four straight games to start the season, and drew even with Pace in its last game.
NEXT ON TAP
The Chargers will play at home for the sixth time in seven games to start the season when they host Saint Rose on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
