THE LEAD
After opening their home schedule with three impressive performances, capped off by an exciting five set regional victory over Molloy, the Chargers will put that three match win streak on the line when they travel to Long Island for a pair of neutral site matches. First on the docket will be a meeting with Lewis on Friday (5:00 p.m.) while another key regional match awaits on Saturday against Holy Family (11:00 a.m.).
SERIES HISTORY VS LEWIS
New Haven and the Lewis Flyers meet for the first time in the history of the two programs, while the Chargers have met a handful of GLVC opponents in the past; Southern Indiana, Missouri St. Louis, Truman State and Indianapolis.
SERIES HISTORY VS HOLY FAMILY
New Haven and Holy Family meet for the sixth time in the history of the two programs and the first time since the Tigers eliminated the Chargers from the 2018 NCAA Division II Championship in the East Regional semifinal round. That victory for Holy Family was the first and only in the all-time series against New Haven with the Chargers winning the first four matches which spanned a six season stretch (2007-13).
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
Following an exciting five set thriller against Molloy that capped off a perfect start to their home schedule, the Chargers will look to build on a three-match win streak when they take on a pair of non-conference opponents on a neutral court at Molloy College. Leading the Blue and Gold into the weekend is sophomore
Ruby Fera (Seattle, Wash./Ballard), the 2018 NE10 Rookie of the Year, who has accumulated 73 kills while she is also second defensively with 93 digs. Following her in leading the offense is junior
Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) and senior
Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) who have dropped 68 and 66 hammers, respectively. Among all the leading hitters, Nowicki leads the team with a .250 attack percentage. Also among the leaders is
Camille Garden (Atlanta, Ga./Landmark Christian) who has 49 kills to her credit while she leads the team with 20 blocks, tied for third most in the NE10. Defensively, freshman libero
Julia Guarniere (Milford, N.H./Milford) leads New Haven with 135 digs, the only player in triple digits.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
A top-five team in the nation, Lewis comes east with a 7-1 overall record after dropping their first match of the season as part of the Colorado Premier Challenge this past weekend. The preseason favorite to win the GLVC, Lewis is led by senior middle and right side Colleen Wilhelm, an NCAA Championship All-Tournament selection last season. So far in 2019, Wilhelm leads the Flyers offense with 89 kills and a .305 attack percentage. Just behind her with 87 kills is junior middle hitter Ave Venema who is hitting at a team-high .403 average.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Suffering a three-set loss to Georgian Court in its conference opener, Holy Family enters the weekend with a 4-3 record and will also take on Lewis prior to the regional match-up against the Chargers. For the season, the Tigers are led by junior outside hitter Carly Covington who has drilled 96 kills and is among the defensive leaders with 87 digs. Following her in leading the offense is Gianna Pesognelli who has dropped in 72 kills and leads the team with a .377 attack percentage.
UP NEXT
Following the weekend in Long Island, the Chargers will remain on the road when they travel to Springfield, Mass. for a date with American International. The 2019 NE10 opener against the Yellow Jackets is scheduled for Tuesday with the first serve set for 7:00 p.m.
