WEST HAVEN, Conn. – On the heels of a close 4-3 defeat at the nation's top ranked team on Wednesday, the New Haven men's soccer team will hit the road once again this Saturday for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Saint Anselm.
INSIDE THE SERIES
New Haven is 6-7-3 all-time against Saint Anselm. New Haven has lost to the Hawks just once over their last nine matchups, with last season's edition ending in scoreless draw.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (2-3-0, 0-2-0 NE10)
New Haven opened up the season by going 2-2 on its four-game homestand, then falling 4-3 at No. 1 Adelphi on Wednesday. Senior Nate Puduzzi leads the team with four goal and eight points, including a two-goal effort in a 3-0 win over Nyack last Tuesday.
JP Viruet (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) has two goals and has registered at least one point in three out of five matches, including goals in back-to-back games against Molloy and Nyack. Junior
Sean Skeens (Auckland, New Zealand) scored twice against Adelphi, both coming on headers off free kicks.
New Haven has had a good amount of success off set pieces so far this season, scoring five goals in their first five games off corner and free kicks.
Estanislao Desseno (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Saint Patrick College) is tied for the conference lead with four assists on the season, including two off free kicks in the second half against Adelphi.
Offensively, New Haven is scoring exactly two goals per game this season.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS (4-2-0, 0-2-0 NE10)
After starting the season with four consecutive non-conference wins, Saint Anselm has dropped the first two games of its NE10 schedule in a pair of 2-1 defeats to Bentley and Stonehill. Averaging 2.7 goals per game this season, junior Zach Elliot and sophomore Taylor Silverstein lead the way with four goals apiece, and sophomore Michael Budrewicz is tied for the conference lead with four assists.
Defensively, the Hawks have held their opponents to one goal in four of their six games. In goal, senior Jacob Rostkowski has seen a majority of the action this season, holding a 2.06 GAA while appearing in all six games.
