THE LEAD
The Chargers will close out a four-game road swing with a visit to the Empire State on Saturday when they take on the capital city team of Saint Rose. New Haven looks to build on the momentum of a four-set win over AIC to open NE10 action while the Gold Knights are also riding the high of victory as they opened conference play with a four-set win over Assumption.
SERIES HISTORY VS SAINT ROSE
In a series dominated by the Chargers, New Haven and Saint Rose meet for the 15th time in the history of the two programs. The Chargers opened up the series with a three-set victory in 1985 and didn't meet the Golden Knights again until joining the NE10 in 2008. Once restarting the series, the Chargers rattled off nine straight victories before Saint Rose broke the undefeated record with a three set sweep on October 20, 2015. New Haven has won the last three meetings, all of them in straight sets.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
Thanks to strong performances from junior
Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) and freshman
Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) in the NE10 opening victory over American International, the Chargers will put a perfect 1-0 record in conference play on the line Saturday in the Empire State. Overall for the season, New Haven is led by sophomore
Ruby Fera (Seattle, Wash./Ballard), the reigning NE10 Rookie of the Year, who enters Saturday's match one kill shy of reaching the century mark. She is also among the leading defenders with 130 digs, combining her numbers for five double doubles on the season. Following her in leading the Blue and Gold is junior
Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) (91 kills) and senior
Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) (88). Of the three leading hitters, Nowicki leads the way with a .201 attack percentage. New Haven has relied on a pair of setters so far this season with junior
Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) racking up 260 kills and freshman
Sammie Paguia (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) chipping in 85. Another rookie,
Julia Guarniere (Milford, N.H./Milford) leads the Chargers defensively with 188 digs, while junior Camilly Garden leads the blocking efforts with 29 total returns.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
Saint Rose snapped a four-match skid with an NE10 opening victory on Tuesday night, defeating the Assumption College Greyhounds in four sets to improve to 7-6 overall on the season. Through the first 13 matches, the Golden Knights are led by senior outside hitter Stevie Schweitzer who has 135 kills to her credit, 59 more than her next closest teammate. Her average of 3.21 kills per set comes courtesy of a .169 attack percentage as she has taken nearly 200 more swings than any of her teammates. Following her in leading the offense is junior middle and right side Kyla Archie who has put down 76 kills on the year. Defensively, Saint Rose is led by senior libero Tina Ceriello who has collected 257 digs. As a team, Saint Rose is out blocking its competition, with Archie leading the team and the NE10 with 44 total blocks.
UP NEXT
Following today's match, the Chargers begin a five-game home stand that begins with a pair of non-conference matches. First on the docket is a visit from the Caldwell Cougars on Thursday, October 3 with first serve scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
