WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven football team will have an opportunity to showcase its talent against the best in the Ivy League in 2020 when they travel to Hanover, N.H. for a date with the Dartmouth Big Green on Saturday, September 19.
The game, which was announced by Director of Athletics and Recreation Sheahon Zenger, will take place at Dartmouth's historical Memorial Field which was originally built in 1893. "I appreciate the opportunity Dartmouth is providing for our football team," said Zenger. "Playing at Dartmouth not only provides great competition, it will also provide an amazing backdrop for our fans. This experience will showcase what the future of the University of New Haven and Charger athletics can be."
"We always look to build one of the most competitive schedules in the region and this game does just that," said head coach Chris Pincince. "The opportunity to challenge our players against the reigning Ivy League co-champions prior to opening NE10 play will pay dividends as we get into the grind of conference play. As we look to set the standard in the NE10 we need to compete against the best."
Notes:
· Dartmouth is coming off of a banner season that saw a 9-1 overall record, tied for the top spot in the Ivy League with Yale.
· The Chargers closed out 2019 winning their final four games to end with a 7-3 record, including a 6-2 mark in NE10 play which tied Bentley for the best record in conference play.
· New Haven returns its starting quarterback from last season, Christian Lupoli (Branford, Conn./Notre Dame), who racked up 1,308 yards on 94 completions with 14 touchdowns. Lupoli closed out 2019 with a 59.9 percent completion average.
· The Chargers will also benefit from the return of redshirt sophomore Shamar Logan (Brooklyn, N.Y./High School for Youth & Community Development) who closed out his rookie campaign on the Blue and Gold turf with 1,000 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Logan is the first Charger to rush for 1,000 or more yards since Andre Anderson racked up 1,150 yards in 2015.
· The match-up against Dartmouth marks the second time in three seasons the Chargers will face off against a Division I opponent, meeting Bryant to open the 2018 campaign, falling 41-31 after making a late run.
· New Haven has a long history of playing teams who were at the time or are now Division I members. Among the highlights in that long list is a 2001 victory over No. 11 Villanova at Villanova Stadium. With current head coach Chris Pincince, then in his third season as the offensive coordinator, the Chargers held the Wildcats to seven yards on a fourth-and-nine to extend a potential game-winning drive.
