Men's Basketball Tabbed Second in Preseason Poll of Head Coaches

Full NE10 Release

MANSFIELD, Mass. –
In a poll of all head coaches, the University of New Haven men's basketball team was selected to finish second in the Southwest Division in the Northeast-10 Conference Preseason Poll. Overall, New Haven finished just four points behind the first place choice, Adelphi, while also earning four of the 14 possible first place votes.

New Haven registered 74 points in the poll, while Adelphi earned the top spot with 78 points and six first place tallies.  Following the Panthers and Chargers in the Southwest Division is Southern Connecticut who earned four first place votes but finished with 69 points, while Le Moyne garnered the final first place vote and 56 points overall to finish fourth. Pace, American International and Saint Rose round out the Southwest Division with Pace earning 48 points for fifth place and the Yellow Jackets and Golden Knights finishing in a deadlock for sixth place with 30 points apiece.

In the Northeast Division, Saint Anselm was the unanimous favorite scoring 91 points and 13 of the 14 first-place votes. The remaining first place tally went to Bentley who finished second with 80 points. Stonehill (63 points) and Southern New Hampshire (56) rounded out the top-five, while Assumption (43), Franklin Pierce (35) and Saint Michael's (27) round out the entirety of the Northeast Division.

Having not seen competition since the Northeast-10 Conference Championship in March of 2020, the Chargers return over half of their starting line-up from two seasons ago including guards Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) and Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) as well as forward Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie). Combined, the trio accounted for over 40% of the scoring in 2019-20, while Thomas finished second on the team with 143 rebounds.

New Haven also welcomes a number of new faces, including a pair of Division I transfers in graduate student Nick Crocker (East Falmouth, M.A./Falmouth High School) (Bryant) and sophomore Tavin Pierre Philippe (Brooklyn, N.Y./Baldwin High School) (Stony Brook) as well as adding significant height in the addition of 7'2" senior Majur Majak (/).

The Chargers will open up a 26-game 2021-22 campaign on Friday, November 12 in the first of two games at the College of State Island Tip-Off Tournament. The Blue and Gold are slated to open up the season against the host of that tournament, the CSI Dolphins with tip-off slated for 5:00 p.m. Also highlighting the Chargers schedule are 13 games in the friendly confines of Charger Gymnasium, including a New Year's Day matinee against NE10 foe Adelphi.
