INSIDE THE SERIES
The series has been a tightly contested one for these two programs, as the Chargers trail 17-19 in the series. New Haven holds a 11-9 record when hosting but lacks the same luck when on the road, falling behind 6-10.
The last time these two have met was Feb. 8, 2020 and it was a 77-38 home win for the Le Moyne Dolphins.
SCOUTING NEW HAVEN
The Chargers enter Saturday's matchup against Le Moyne, looking to extend their win streak to four games.
New Haven's defense was able to come through in the clutch last game, holding the College of Staten Island to 2-14 (14.3%) from the field in the fourth quarter, and 1-9 (11.1%) in overtime.
The Chargers limited the Dolphins to 6-26 (23.1%) shooting from beyond the arc, including 0-10 between the fourth quarter and overtime.
Both teams forced 20 turnovers in the thriller but the Chargers were able to do more with it, scoring three more points off of turnovers.
Leading the defensive effort was
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) and
Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./New Milford), who combined for five blocks and five steals.
Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) had another solid outing for the Blue and Gold, scoring 18 points on 28% shooting while adding six rebounds, three steals and two assists to her stat line.
Pergola, however, was the main highlight, setting a new career-high with 24 points and six made three-pointers. In addition to her defensive prowess, Pergola added nine rebounds to her total, tying her for 17th in the conference with 6.3 rebounds per game.
Also with nine rebounds and double-digit points in the game was junior forward
Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden), who came one board short of her fourth career double-double and second consecutive on the season.
Deshaies was named NE10 Player of the Week in week 1 after averaging 15.5 points and 14 Â rebounds while shooting 56 percent from the field. Her 12.3 average rebounds currently leads the NE10 while her 14.3 points per game ranks 12th.
One player who passed Deshaies in points is Pergola, who after dropping a career-high brings her average up to 16.7 ppg (sixth in NE10).
The long ball was the difference maker in the winning effort over the Dolphins, as the team went 9-30 from the arc (30%), nearly double the amount of 3FG made in the first two games combined.
SCOUTING DOLPHINS
The Dolphins have only played one game prior to their Saturday matchup with the Chargers, but they made it count.
Le Moyne handily won in an 82-48 victory over East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, where they saw a combination of nine different scorers, with three reaching double-digits.
Le Moyne was led by Emma Brinker and Saeeda Abdul-Aziz, who both put up double-doubles in the dominant win. Brinker led all scorers with 26 points on 60 percent shooting while adding 11 rebounds, while Abdul-Aziz scorer 21 points with 11 rebounds as well.
The lead rebounder, however, was Jenna Zimmerman who pulled down 16 rebounds, including five on offense.
The Dolphins, as a team, shot 28-68 from the field for 41.2 percent while going 7-15 (46.7%) from the arc.
Le Moyne easily outrebounded the Warriors, 58-27, while nearly outrebounding East Stroudsburg on the offensive end alone, grabbing 24 offensive rebounds in the game.
The team scored 34 points in the paint in addition to 28 points on second chance opportunities.
The Dolphins have three players averaging 10+ points and three players averaging 10+ rebounds, as well.Â
Junior guard Lytoya Baker averages 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists for the fins.
The Dolphins boast a roster comprised of eight guards and five forwards. The class makeup is divided into four freshmen, no sophomores, four juniors, four seniors and one graduate student.
Mary Grimes was named the sixth head women's basketball coach in program history and the first African-American to serve as head coach of an intercollegiate athletic program in Le Moyne history on June 15, 2021. Grimes previously served two separate stints as an assist coach at Le Moyne and returns after a two-year term as an assistant coach at Xavier University.Â
Grimes entered her first year of her career as a head coach, coming into the matchup with a 1-0 record.
