OPENING TIP
The New Haven women's basketball team dropped their first game of the season on Saturday in a 65-48 loss to conference opponent, Le Moyne. The Chargers return home for the first time this year as they host the Pace Setters on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 5:30 PM at Charger Gymnasium.
INSIDE THE SERIES
History has favored the Setters when these two programs clash, as the Chargers trail 10-27 in the all-time series. New Haven holds an 8-10 record when hosting the Setters, as opposed to a 2-17 record when in Pleasantville. The last time these two have met was Feb. 5, 2020 and it was a 47-35 home win for the Chargers.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
The Chargers enter Tuesday's matchup against the Pace Setters, looking to get back in the win column in their home opener.
New Haven jumped out to an early 23-7 lead in the first quarter but were held to one of nine shooting in the second quarter, with the lone basket coming on a Pergola three-pointer.
The Chargers were held to 16-56 shooting (28.6%) and 3-14 (21.4%) from three by the Dolphins, both a season-low.
Le Moyne only forced two more turnovers than the Chargers, however, the Dolphins ended with more points off turnovers and more fast break points, as well.
Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) once again led the team in scoring with 14 points on 28 percent shooting while adding three rebounds and two steals to her stats.
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) notched another double-digit performance, scoring 11 points on 40 percent shooting. Pergola also tallied three assists, bringing her season total to 15 or 3.8 per game, ranking eighth most in the conference.
Cleaning up the glass with 14 boards was junior forward
Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden), who came two points of her fourth career double-double.
Deshaies was named NE10 Player of the Week in week 1 after averaging 15.5 points and 14 Â rebounds while shooting 56 percent from the field.
Her 12.8 average rebounds currently ranks third in the NE10 while her 12.8 points per game ranks 12th.
SCOUTING THE SETTERS
The Setters enter the game with a 2-0 record, coming off a 70-63 conference win over the American International Yellow Jackets on Saturday.
The Setters were led to victory by forward Lauren Schetter, who dropped 18 points on 50 percent shooting while grabbing nine rebounds, as well. Pace saw eight different scorers in the win with three players reaching nine points.
The Setters average 57.5 points per game with Schetter leading all scorers with 17.5 points on the season.
Schetter is the only player to average double-digit points for Pace, while also leading in rebounds. While impressive on offense, Schetter also makes an impact on defense with three steals and two blocks on the season.
Leading the Setters in assists is senior guard Lauren Hackett, who has totaled eight so far. Nobody else on Pace has more than four.
Returning to West Haven will be
Jasmine White (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's), who spent the 2019-20 season with the Chargers before joining the Setters. White made 27 appearances for New Haven, averaging 3.9 points and 3.5 rebounds a game while shooting 41.8 percent from the field.Â
Pace, as a team, has shot 44-111 from the field for 39.6 percent while going 9-38 (23.7%) from the arc. Pace has easily outrebounded their opponents, 83-63, with an average of 10 more boards per game. The team scored 46 points in the paint in addition to 20 points on second chance opportunities.
The Setters boast a roster comprised of ten guards, four forwards and one center. The class makeup is divided into four freshmen, five sophomores, no juniors, three seniors and three graduate students.
Carrie Seymour entered her 30th year as the head coach of Pace Women's Basketball. In that time, Seymour holds a record of 488-334 (.593), while leading the Setters to the NCAA Tournament 10 times.Â
