SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
The Chargers enter Sunday's matchup against the Chestnut Hill Griffins looking to extend their win streak against non-conference teams.
The squad took to the road on Friday for a rematch with the Bloomfield Bears, who the Chargers opened their season with at Moore Field House in New Haven.
The second time they played went slightly different but ultimately had the same result, a victory for New Haven.
The Chargers took home the 62-57 win after a tightly contested battle that saw six lead changes.
Aurora Deshaies's (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) layup off a
Briana Van Cleaf (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) assist with 7:24 left was enough to give the Chargers a 44-43 lead but it was
Brie Pergola's (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) layup in the final 41 seconds that iced the game and sent New Haven back to even on the year.
The Chargers shot 23-67Â (34.3%) from the field during the game while going five of 17 from the perimeter (29.4%). Bloomfield ended the game shooting 23-58 (39.7%) including five of 10Â (50%) from the arc.
After going into the half tied at 28, the Chargers have now been outscored 329-291Â in the first half this season while outscoring opponents 298-289Â in the second.Â
Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) continues to be a force for the Chargers, finishing the game with 17 points, four rebounds and a season-high four assists.
DeBose now ranks seventh amongst scorers in the conference with 16.7 points per game.
Pergola, 6-14 (42.9%), and
Deshaies
, 7-16 (43.8%), both totaled 16 points in the winning effort, with the former going 3-6 (50%) from the perimeter. Deshaies tallied 12 rebounds, her fifth straight game reaching double-digits, to give her a double-double on the night. Despite a dominating effort on the glass from Deshaies, it was
Van Cleaf
who led the Chargers with a career-high 13 rebounds, seven of which came on offense.
The Chargers continue to control in the paint, outrebounding their past five opponents, 212-166, in that span. Deshaies ranks fourth in the NE10 with 11.4 rebounds per game while Van Cleaf is tied for 16th with 6.6.
New Haven forced 18 turnovers in the loss, turning those into 18 points on the other end while also scored eight points on second chance opportunities.
SCOUTING THE GRIFFINS
The Chestnut Hill Griffins enter the matchup 7-3 on the season and 2-0 during conference play. The Griffins have won four of the their last five, with their one loss coming in overtime against Kutztown University.
They are riding a one game win streak after a commanding 58-39 win over Mercy College, holding the Mavericks to 15-52 (28.8%) shooting.
On offense, senior forward Leah Miller has led the Griffins with 16.4 points and 10.1 rebounds per game, however, she hasn't played since the 12/05 win over Saint Thomas Aquinas.
Bri Hewlett made four of five three-pointers in the last game, finishing with 14 points. Cassie Sebold has been the team's perimeter threat, hitting 13 threes to start the year, while averaging 13 points.
Freshman forward Emily Chimel has been great for the Griffins off the bench, averaging 13.2 points and 8.7 rebounds per contest.
On defense, Chestnut Hill averages 7.2 steals and 3.0 blocks per game. Chimel has been the Griffins best defender, totaling 10 steals and 13 blocks.
Chestnut Hill ranks 7th in the CACC with an average of 64.2Â points per game, while shooting a 7th best 37.7 percent from the field. The Griffins allow an average of 58 points per game to their opponent on 38 percent shooting. As a whole, they rank second in the conference, averaging 43.1 rebounds for a +8.9 margin.
Chestnut Hill boasts a diverse and experienced roster comprised of ten guards and five forwards. The class makeup is divided into four freshmen, one sophomores, five juniors, and five seniors.
The Griffins are led by Jim Connolly, who was named head coach of the Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team prior to the start of the 2019-2020 season. This is Connolly's first head coaching appointment, adding to a resume that includes assistant posts at Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rival Jefferson (2015-2019) and Bryn Athyn College (2014-2015). He enters the game with an 18-21 record at the helm.
