OPENING TIP
The University of New Haven dropped their second straight game and seventh of the season, a 61-64 loss to Stonehill on Saturday, Jan. 15 after nearly a month away from the hardwood. The loss drops the Chargers to 5-7 on the year as their conference struggles continue. The squad will stay at Charger Gymnasium as they host the visiting Adelphi Panthers on Monday, Jan. 17 after the initial date of Jan.1 was postponed.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The series is currently tied at 19 a piece in the historic rivalry. The Panthers hold the advantage, however, holding a four game win streak over the Chargers. The last time these two programs faced off was a 66-52 win for Adelphi on Feb. 22, 2020 at Charger Gymnasium. When hosting the Panthers, history has favored the Chargers as they lead 12-7 when playing in West Haven.

SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
Saturday's game was the team's first game back on the court since Dec. 19. Despite missing a few key players, the Chargers kept the Skyhawks close but ultimately fell short, 61-64.
The Chargers enter this Monday's matchup against the Adelphi Panthers still looking for their first NE10 victory of the 2021-22 season.
In their last time out, New Haven struggled out of the gate, falling behind 15-0 to start the game. However, the Chargers worked their way back to cut the deficit to just seven at halftime.
After
Briana Van Cleaf's (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) lone basket in the second half with 6:45 left in the fourth quarter, the Charger's took their first and only lead of the game, 50-49.
The Skyhawks ended up pulling ahead late, despite a last second three-pointer by
Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) to give the Chargers one last shot.
The Chargers shot 24-62 (38.7%) from the field during the game while going an effective eight of 16 from the perimeter (50.0%). Stonehill ended the game shooting 26-62 (41.9%) but were held to just 3-10 (30.0%) from the arc. The three three-pointers is the lowest allowed by the Chargers since the season opener in which the defense held the Bloomfield Bears to just 1-17 shooting from deep.
The Skyhawks were at the line more often than the Chargers, converting 9-14 (64.3%) while the Chargers went 5-6 (83.3%), their most efficient game at the line all season.
Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) continues to be a threat on both ends of the court, racking up a career-high 24 points on 47.4 percent shooting while recording three steals, as well. DeBose now ranks fifth amongst all NE10 scorers as she averages 16.8 points per game. She has also reached double-digit points in every game, so far.
King finished with 11 points, tying a career-high of her own. She shot 40 percent in the game including 2-3 from beyond the arc, while also tallying three steals.
Marigona Bacaliu (Worcester, Mass./Putnam Science Academy) made her first career start, scoring eight points while making both of her three-point attempts.Â
Junior forward
Alyssa Stevenson (Watertown, N.Y./South Jefferson Central) dominated the second half, ending the game with seven points and 11 rebounds, both career-highs for her, as well.
Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) streak of double-digit rebounds came to end as she grabbed five boards while scoring four points. Despite the off game, Deshaies still ranks within the top three in both rebounds and field goal percentage.
The Chargers outrebounded the Skyhawks, 39-38, as they've outrebounded their opponents, 484-460, on the year. New Haven forced 20 turnovers in the loss, turning those into 20 points on the other end. The Chargers scored 11 points on second chance opportunities but were outscored on the fast break, 10-5.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
The Adelphi Panthers enter the matchup 5-8 on the season and 3-5 during conference play. The Panthers are currently on a one-game win streak after edging out Saint Anselm, 63-60.
On offense, Adelphi is led by graduate guard Emily Miccile, who averages 12.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Both rank within the top 20 in the conference with the later ranking 11th of NE10 players.
Miccile is coming off a six point game in which she only shot 3-12 (25%). Graduate center Rebecca Lee led the Panthers to victory with a 16 point-7 rebound effort, shooting 7-11 (63.6%).Â
Freshman guard Kaitlyn O'Connell has provided the team with perimeter, shooting 20-65 (30.8%) from three so far this season. O'Connell finished with 13 points in the win after shooting 3-8 from beyond the arc.
The Panthers have seen 10 players start at least one game on the year with the most recent lineup being Lee, Miccile, Emma Cuccurullo, Ty'zhea Hawkins, and Sydney Rosenoff.
On defense, Adelphi averages 8.4 steals and 4.0 blocks, both ranked 4th in the conference. The Panthers have two players with 25+ steals on the year, while both have 10+ blocks, as well. Cuccurullo ranks fourth in the NE10 with 2.2 steals per game, while Miccile ranks 9th with 1.9.Â
Adelphi ranks 9th in the NE10 with an average of 61.4 points per game, while shooting an 14th best 35.7 percent from the field. The Panthers allow a NE10 fourth-most 64.5Â points per game to their opponent on 40.7 percent shooting. As a whole, they rank tenth in the conference, averaging 37.2 rebounds for a -1.8 margin.
Adelphi boasts a diverse roster comprised of 11 guards, five forwards, and one center. The class makeup is divided into six freshmen, two sophomores, no juniors, three seniors and six graduate students.
The Panthers are led by head coach Sade Jackson, who returned to her alma mater as the 12th head coach in the program's history after being named coach on May 17, 2021. She appeared in 110 games as a Panther from 2010-14 and is one of only 22 players in the program's history to reach 1,000 career points. Jackson posted lifetime averages of 10.8 points, 6.1 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game, to go along with 20 career double-doubles and three triple-doubles. Her 6.1 assist-per-game average is tied for 24th all-time in Division II history and her career assist record stands at 673, which is second-most all-time in the NE10.
NEXT UP
The Chargers will travel to New Hampshire to take on the Saint Anselm Hawks. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 5:30 P.M. at Stoutenburgh Gym on Wednesday, Jan. 19.
