OPENING TIP
The University of New Haven women's basketball fell to 5-9 after a 43-81 loss to the Saint Anselm Hawks on Jan. 19. After their first road game in over a month, the Chargers return home again to host the Assumption Greyhounds at Charger Gymnasium on Jan. 22 at 1:30 P.M.
INSIDE THE SERIES
History has favored the Greyhounds when these two programs collide. Assumption holds a 26-10 lead in the series history. Assumption enters the game on a win-game win streak after defeating the Chargers 57-59 on Jan. 25, 2020. When hosting the Greyhounds, the Chargers are 6-12.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
The Chargers enter this weekend matchup against the Assumption Greyhounds still looking for their first NE10 victory of the 2021-22 season, as they've previously have gone 0-8 to this point.
Last Wednesday's game was the first road game the Chargers played in since Dec. 17 when the squad traveled to Bloomfield.
New Haven came out of the gate with passion against Saint Anselm, playing hard enough to rack up a five point lead towards the end of the first quarter before a pair of clutch shots by the Hawks would send them back to 15 a piece.
Saint Anselm broke ahead after a 4-12 second quarter, spearheaded by a 6-7 effort from the Hawks at the line.
After battling back from double-digit deficits in the past two games, the Chargers couldn't find that same luck as they would eventually fall to the Hawks, 43-81, as their losing streak continues.
The Chargers shot 16-59 (27.1%) from the field during the game while only going two of 18 from the perimeter (11.1%).
Saint Anselm ended the game shooting 27-54 (50.0%), while exploding from the perimeter for 13-24 (54.2%) after being held to 2-9 in the first half. While at the line, the Hawks converted 14 of 19 shots (73.7%) while the Chargers went 9-13 (69.2%).
Offense was hard to come by in the game as usual shot creator, senior guard
Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) was held to only six points.
Those six points are her lowest scored, so far, in the season as it breaks a 13 game streak of double-digit points. DeBose is still sixth in the conference in scoring, however, as she averages 15.8 on the year.
The star of the Charger's offense in this game, however, was freshman guard
Charlotte Bassett (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), who shined during her playing time. Bassett set a career-high in points with nine off 4-7 shooting from the field.
Junior guard
Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) started her third straight game of the year, as she finished with five points and a career-high three assists and four steals on defense.
Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) made her return after missing last week's thriller versus Adelphi, putting up a 10 point- 7 rebound effort. Deshaies is averaging 10.5 points on a conference-best 51.2% shooting while pulling in 10.5 rebounds, third in NE10.
For only the fifth time this season, the Chargers were outrebounded, 32-40. New Haven forced 17 turnovers in the loss, turning those into 10 points on the other end. The Chargers scored 13 points on second chance opportunities and were outscored on the fast break, 15-3.
SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS
Assumption Greyhounds enter the matchup  5-8 on the season and 2-6 during conference play.
The Greyhounds are currently on a five-game losing streak after dropping a 45-55 loss to the Adelphi Panthers.
On offense, Assumption is led by graduate guard Meghan Cramb, who averages 11.7 points per game on 36.5 percent shooting.
Cramb also ranks ninth overall in the conference in three-point percentage with 36.5.Â
Cramb is coming off a 15 point-four rebound game in which she shot 3-7 from the field and 7-8 from the line.Â
Sophomore guard Amanda Mieczkowski is close behind her with 9.5 points per game on 43.9 percent shooting, 18th in the NE10.
Mieczkowski was NE10 week 4 rookie of the week after she averaged 15 points a game in a 1-1 week for the Hounds, scoring 18 against Bentley and 12 in a win over Saint Michael's, while grabbing eight rebounds and three steals over the two-game span.
The Greyhounds have seen nine players start at least one game this season with the most recent lineup being Mieczkowski, Cramb, Monica Spain, Anna Davis and Emma Poulin.
On defense, Assumption averages 6.5 steals and 3.6 blocks. The Greyhounds have four players with 10+ steals on the year and two with 10+ blocks, Spain and freshman guard Marina Callahan.
Assumption ranks 12thth in the NE10 with an average of 58.8 points per game, while shooting a 12th best 35.8 percent from the field.
The Greyhounds allow a NE10 fourth-least 60.1 points per game to their opponent on 37.1 percent shooting, fifth in conference. As a whole, they rank 11th in the conference, averaging 37.8 rebounds for a -1.1 margin.
Assumption boasts a relatively small and diverse roster comprised of ten guards and four forwards. The class makeup is divided into four freshmen, three sophomores, one juniors, five seniors and one graduate student.
The Greyhounds are led by head coach Kerry Phayre, who entered her 25th season as the women's basketball head coach at Assumption in 2020. The winningest coach in Assumption's men's or women's basketball history, Phayre comes into the 2020-21 season with an overall mark at Assumption of 394-289 (.577), along with a 280-225 record in NE10 action (.554).Â
NEXT UP
The Chargers will host Southern New Hampshire for their second game of a three game home stand. Tip-off for that game is set for 5:30 P.M. on Tuesday, Jan. 25 at Charger Gymnasium.
