OPENING TIP
The University of New Haven women's basketball fell to 5-10 after a 58-48 loss to the Assumption Greyhounds on Jan. 22. The Chargers will play their second of a two-game homestand against the Saint Michael's Purple Knights at Charger Gymnasium on Jan. 27 at 5:00 P.M.Â
INSIDE THE SERIES
History has favored the Chargers when these two programs clash. New Haven holds the advantage with a 11-8 record in the series with a 6-5 record when hosting the Purple Knights. The Chargers enter the matchup on an eight-game winning streak over Saint Michael's with their last match taking place on Jan. 11, 2020, resulting in a 61-51 win for New Haven. The first time these two met was back on Feb. 19, 1983 and was a victorious, 75-49, effort for the Chargers.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
The Chargers enter this mid-week matchup against the Saint Michael's Purple Knights still looking for their first NE10 victory of the 2021-22 season, as they've previously gone 0-9 to this point. Not only that but the Chargers are looking to break a five game skid and get back in the win column.
Last Saturday's 48-58 loss to Assumption marked their fifth straight home loss as the team has gone 2-8 in their last ten games.
Despite allowing a Assumption three-pointer to start the game, the Chargers battled hard in the first quarter, eventually racking up a five point lead before a pair of last second free throws sent them into the second quarter up three. The second quarter looked drastically different for New Haven as the Greyhounds outscored them 20-8 while shooting 8-14 (57.14%). The second half of the game was tightly contested but the Chargers couldn't overcome that second quarter deficit.
Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) dominated in the paint, racking up a career-high 24 points on 11- 16 shooting. The junior forward also pulled down 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season and eighth of her career. Deshaies is averaging 11.5 points on a conference-best 53.3% shooting while pulling in 10.6 rebounds, third in NE10.
As a team, the Chargers shot 19-56 (33.9%) from the field during the game while only going 3-17 (17.6%) from the perimeter. Assumption ended the game shooting 20- 51 (39.2%), while shooting 6-16 (37.5%) from long range. While at the line, the Greyhounds converted 12 of 16 shots (75.0%) while the Chargers went 7-14 (50.0%).
Offense was once again hard to come by in the game, as usual shot creator, senior guard
Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) was held to only nine points. This is DeBose's second-straight game without double-digit points as she shot 4-14 (28.6%) in the game. DeBose is still ninth in the conference in scoring, however, as she averages 15.3 on the year.
Junior guard
Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) started her fourth straight game of the year, this time shooting 2-10 to finish with six points, four rebounds and two assists. Junior forward
Alyssa Stevenson (Watertown, N.Y./South Jefferson Central) ended the game with three points, all from the line, while pulling down nine rebounds.
Gabrielle Stickle (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) made her first start of her career, finishing with three points off a three-pointer in the first for her lone basket.
For only the sixth time this season, the Chargers were outrebounded, 34-40. New Haven forced 20 turnovers in the loss, turning those into 11 points on the other end. The Chargers scored five points on second chance opportunities and were outscored on the fast break, 2-15.
SCOUTING THE PURPLE KNIGHTS
The Saint Michael's enter the matchup 3-10 on the season and 1-6 during conference play. The Purple Knights are currently on a five-game losing streak after dropping a 76-62 loss to the Adelphi Panthers.
On offense, Saint Michael's is led by Nicole Anderson, who averages 13.2 points per game on 34.0 percent shooting. Anderson ranks 16th overall in the conference in points per game while shooting a 14th best 34.5 percent from deep. Anderson is coming off a seven point- five assist game in which she shot 3-9 from the field and 1-6 from the the arc.
Emma MacDonough is another scoring threat for the Purple Knights, as she averages 11.6 points per game on 40.9 percent shooting from the field. Nicole Ladas leads the team with 7.6 rebounds per game while also scoring 9.9 points per game. Makayla Blake was named NE10 rookie of the week in week 3after she posted 16 points, 10 rebounds, including five offensive boards, and two assists, one block and one steal in an 84-46 win against Bryant & Stratton - Albany on Tuesday. She shot 7-for-15 from the field and 2-for-2 on free throws.
The Purple Knights have only seen seven players start at least one game this season with the most recent lineup being MacDonough, Anderson, Ladas, Anika Kapral, and Paige Slaven.
On defense, Assumption averages 4.5 steals and 2.8 blocks. Kapral leads the team with 12 blocks on the season, while Molly Brophy leads with 17 steals.
Saint Michael's ranks 13th in the NE10 with an average of 57.5 points per game, while shooting a 9th best 36.8 percent from the field. The Purple Knights allow a NE10 tenth-most 64.6 points per game to their opponent on 38.2 percent shooting, seventh in conference. As a whole, they rank fourth in the conference, averaging 40.8 rebounds for a +3.4 margin.
Saint Michael's boasts a relatively small and diverse roster comprised of seven guards and six forwards. The class makeup is divided into two freshmen, three sophomores, four juniors, four seniors.
The Purple Knights are led by head coach Shannon Bollhardt, who entered into her ninth season as the Saint Michael's women's basketball head coach in 2021-22, and her 14th overall as a coach in the program.
